IDR is one of the worst summer blockbusters ever. Everything in that felt so flat and boring. Nothing clicked. Nothing. Even Godzilla 1998 had some moments.
The first trailer made Free Guy look like a BOMB, but Reynold's social media marketing and the later trailers /TV spots created a strong impression. The reviews also were great, which boosted the buzz. Who knew this would be the surprise box office hit of the summer and beat bigger easier selling titles.
This movie smells like an experiment gone wrong. No one is interested in out there ideas. Want a simple visually cool action blockbuster with kick ass soundtrack. That's all. If they can't deliver on that then the wachowskis should retire from movie making. Focus on television and producing.
Free Guy should be able to crack 100M when all is said and done. Suicide Squad is a legitimate BOMB. WB and their stupid decision of day and date is hurting their films a lot. That and frankly suicide squad looked meh to the general public. I still feel GvK would have done at least 100 million more worldwide if it was an exclusive theatrical release for 45 days. That or they could have delayed it until June-july in North America and release in other countries in April, May. Would have done 170+ domestic and 600+ WW. It was the only movie in the last 3 quarters of WB schedule that had the mass appeal.
Shawn Levy has grown leaps and bounds as a filmmaker. I like filmmakers that keep innovating or grow with time rather than those who start with a bang and then peter out.
This strategy reminds me of the marketing fox did for Avatar in August 2009. IMAX shows sold out then as well. There was lot of doom and gloom back then too. It survived and became a behemoth. Can Dune do it? It doesn't has the vfx, color and story that connects with all.
Trailer bombed. 1.8M views in 19 hours. Sub 40M. Mortal Kombat had more views and hype and still flopped after a solid OW. I can see this doing much better overseas.
As for the trailer, it looks loads of fun. My kinda martial arts/action movie. R rated would have been great, but oh well.
The reception is in line with most 2nd tier MCU films. Neither truly great nor bad. Just fun times. Still not interested in watching.
Saving my hard earned money for bigger and more interesting looking films.
@Ethan Hunt we can all say the same for Tom Cruise. Immensely talented actor, but wasting his talent on just Mission Impossible and mi type movies.
As for boxoffice, AQP 2 has done extremely well and Cruella did fine too. I think we need a blockbuster MCU movie with excellent reviews and no same day streaming nonsense to shake things up.
F9 seems like a lost cause. Not feeling it now.
I liked Midway, but I cannot forgive Emmerich for IDR. He ruined that franchise completely. Can't even enjoy ID now. Will Smith should have been part of IDR. Would have given some valuable inputs and been another 800+M hit.
