  1. I think Unsane is being underestimated. I think it is going to make the top ten by the skin of its teeth, and I think it has a shot at leaping over Midnight Sun's OW this weekend. At least, this is what I hope. It would be an absolute shame to see the frontloading of horror tank what critics say to be the best wide release debuting this weekend. But I would argue that Unsane has a few things going for it against potential frontloading, including the director's pedigree, and quality of the work, and the novelty of how it was filmed; all of those can entice different filmgoers that aren't already a part of the hardcore horror fanbase. We'll just have to wait and see I guess. And I'm very extremely happy for I Can Only Imagine's excellent hold, but it saddens me that Paul, Apostle of Christ was negatively affected. But it does go to show, for the faith-bases filmmakers, that their audience cares for quality just as much as the other audiences, and that the film needs to be well-rounded, not just be a well-crafted film with a disappointing script. This occurrence will be beneficial to the genre for sure.
  2. One point away... I have to admit, I'm kinda sad about that...
  3. 1. Ready Player One 2. Isle of Dogs 3. A Quiet Place 4. Lean on Pete 5. Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero 6. Borg vs. McEnroe 7. Rampage 8. You Were Never Really Here 8. Beirut 10. God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness
  4. It's official. With an 80% certified Rotten Tomatoes score, Unsane is the only film releasing wide this week that has secured a fresh RT. Midnight Sun (0%), Pacific Rim: Uprising (currently 45%) Paul, Apostle of Christ (currently 25%), and Sherlock Gnomes (TBA) were all at least presumably unable to achieve that. For the people that care about seeing the best film they can, that makes Unsane look very accomplished. Such an occurrence certainly can't hurt its gross!
  5. The only other wide release on September 7th is currently The Nun, so it seems to me that STX 'struck while the iron was hot' in regards to getting this film a date with minimal competition. Such scheduling worked for Death Wish against Red Sparrow (to a degree). Jennifer Garner is certainly not as big of an actress as she was before; but performers have certainly resurged before, and Garner's resurgence just might have started with this: This was one of the most popular internet memes from the previous Oscar ceremony, and it certainly did place a new focus on the actress. So I think it'd be in STX's best interest to release a trailer for this as soon as possible, so people bring up this meme to the point where buzz for the film can pull itself up. I think the best comparison to this film would be The Foreigner from last year: an action thriller distributed by STX that stars a performer who has seemingly lost the stardom they once had. I heard that this project had previously won funding from Orange County (or some sort of community accolade such as that), so my hopes for this project are high.
  6. I'd seize the moment. This kind of film doesn't come out all the time; if you wait, something might happen where you won't get the chance to see it in theaters again.
  7. In my opinion, there certainly is. The films by Affirm Films (including Fireproof, Courageous, Soul Surfer, Heaven is for Real, and All Saints) consistently have more legitimacy as actual films while the films by Pure Flix (the God's Not Dead trilogy, I'm Not Ashamed, Same Kind of Different as Me), rarely have filmmaking merit. Regardless, both companies have begun to develop a certain repetitious style of film for themselves, in the same vein as companies like A24 and Bleecker Streer have grounded themselves in a type/style/niche/flavor of film that is all their own.
  8. I laughed quite a bit throughout the film, but I do feel guilty because I know that all of the pain shown onscreen is real (please correct me if I am wrong)... it's not like Game Night or Tag where you're absolutely certain that the violence against the actors is fake. I think, for the sake of the performers, I'll choose to support something else instead...
  9. Um, it's Affirm Films, not Pure Flix... (Kidding, of course... the two are very similar...)
  10. Bleecker Street knows what they're doing for sure. I think they've been marketing this pretty well for what it is, and I think a small portion of the general horror audience might be interested in this too. I think they might already be releasing this film at a win (as opposed to releasing it at a loss) just because the film was a cheap production. Good reviews certainly help too! They usually can't hurt, that's for sure!
  11. I feel like Neon is getting cocky after the success they had last year with I, Tonya. First, getting Assassination Nation from Sundance with an obligation for a wide release. Then, giving Borg vs. McEnroe a wide release. Now this. A24, in comparison, definitely has more limited releases than they do wide releases. But they've gotten to a point where they are able to do more wide releases because they've gained more experience and credibility. But Neon is still a fledging in comparison. They are exciting, for sure, but I feel like they're rushing in a way that A24 wasn't. Hopefully the inevitable consequences of this approach guides Neon to make more calculated moves in the future. I don't want them to end up like Open Road.
  12. Okay. I am just hesitant to post a trailer like this my first time because the things I saw in the trailer weren't things I could handle watching. But I do understand that others are able to watch it, and that's alright. It helps to know that it's okay to post those trailers going forward, but I will always add an NSFW warning in case someone may need it as much as I do.
  13. While I think Sgt. Stubby may be much more well received critically, I think it may very well be 2018's Ratchet and Clank in the box office sense, especially if Isle of Dogs is a breakout among film pundits across America.
  14. Due to the NSFW nature of the trailer that I saw, I have decided not to post a trailer of the film in this thread. In fact, I thought about whether or not I even wanted to make this thread for what is apparently a new wide release, based on the very grotesque content displayed in the trailer; but a new wide release is a new wide release I guess. You don't have to support a film to be its thread owner, right?
  15. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenge_(2017_film) *Young distributor Neon cracks its knuckles.* Neon has decided to release Revenge, a grindhouse action thriller that debuted at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, in wide release (according to Box Office Mojo). The film is from French filmmakers, but appears to be in the English language. The film is about a young woman who decides to get grisly revenge after she is raped by her millionaire lover's friend. Revenge releases on May 11th.
  16. Been a while since I've posted here! A Annihilation A- Black Panther B Game Night I Can Only Imagine
  17. So Isle of Dogs is expanding nationwide on April 13th, which happens to be Sgt. Stubby's release date. In other words, this film could be in big trouble.
  18. I have my eye on this one for sure. Andrew Garfield knows exactly how to pick a script so I have my eye on anything he does.
  19. I was watching The Voice last night, and I knew that there was something eerily proficient about the TV spot I saw. I had been guilty of completely writing this film off for a long time, but that TV spot... I saw more excellent effects work, more potential for epic moments, more creative applications of the camera. So I'm pleasantly surprised that this didn't fall flat on its face. Now I'm rooting for it to do as well as it can, just because it is of good quality.
  20. In my personal opinion, if you're trying to find the cleverest puns out there, I think you're barking up the wrong tree.
  21. Wait, is Sony about to place this trailer in front of Paul, Apostle of Christ?! Because that's the film they're releasing this weekend! I think that's a pretty interesting idea!
