  1. And Dunkirk as a film hinged solely on its editing to be the film it ended up being. Love it or hate it (and I love it), I think Dunkirk deserves that one for sure.
  2. Blade Runner 2049 had some very impressive visuals. I'm personally hoping that it's able to win the Oscar.
  3. Phantom Thread probably does have the best costumes of the year. I still need to see the film...
  4. I put in my headphones to remind myself of The Shape of Water's score, and now I absolutely believe that such transportative music absolutely deserves a win. It had great competition, but it really does stand out
  5. Meticulously crafted and beautifully minimalistic, Blade Runner 2049 is absolutely a great choice for Production Design.
  6. Well I was rooting for Richard Strickland but, honestly, there are definitely enough Star Wars fans to have guaranteed Kylo Ren the win. But he's certainly not a bad choice. I like the character.
  7. I'd argue the screen transitions. There were many beautiful screen transitions where the images seem to meld within each other. And the film itself is prettt seamless as well, with a lot of smart cuts.
  8. It's always sad to see a masterpiece stumble... this was the right winner!
  9. That's correct; the truth is that I will not root for The Emoji Movie; I had a typo there... (I mean, yeah, the effort level of The Emoji Movie wasn't 0%, but it was egregiously low for an animated feature).
  10. Black Panther continues to be strong. I hope it can go even further than it already has. Red Sparrow's gross is disappointing. But if it gains a following, maybe it can play like last year's The Foreigner, at least domestically. I thought Death Wish would have gone under $5M so this at least feels like a win to me. Though I am expecting sharp decreases next weekend. Good hold for Game Night. It seems like a nice little modest comedy success for Warner Bros. In the case of Peter Rabbit: I went to McDonalds to get a breakfast sandwich today, and I saw that the film was the theme of the toys that come with kid's happy meals. That's when it hit me: if you release an appealing family/kids film at a time where there are little to no family competition, you should not be surprised when the film is able to prolong its advertising reach, and you should not be surprised when the film gains very good holds at the box office. I'm happy for it. Annihilation deserves a lot better, but all things considered, the percent decrease was less than 50%. That's a small sign of audience engagement. Hopefully the film can get a 3x multiplier from its opening weekend, but at the very least, it should end up at least matching Ex Machina's total gross. I can't say anything I've already said for Jumanji and Greatest Showman. Those successes are old news at this point. Fifty Shades' percentage decrease leads me to believe I was ever-so-slightly right about Red Sparrow's impact. But the film is on its fourth weekend, and it has undoubtedly been the subject of bad word of mouth, so it would not have made a difference. And I am also happy that Every Day was able to stay on the top ten for another weekend. Hopefully it can still reach $10M.
  11. I think with faith-based films that may have been direct-to-DVD material are benefitting from box office no matter what exactly the box office is. Their budgets are undoubtedly low and they don't advertise much. Though of course, I also disagree with the notion that every faith-based film belongs away from the theatrical release spectrum. Even a faith-based that seems small at first glance, such as All Saints or Fireproof, can feel epic in a theater. I don't think I would ever directly wish for a film to fail. Especially a film where filmmakers are putting in effort. Hayao Miyazaki once said of his son's film Tales of Earthsea (which is considered the worst Ghibli film), "It was made honestly, so it was good." I wholeheartedly believe that the people behind these films are giving it their all even if they are failing, even if they are blatant hacks. Though I understand that you could argue the film is not made honestly if the filmmakers are hacks. And I do agree with that notion. But they do believe that, and I do believe, that God is using their lack of talent for good, and that the coherency of their films is at least a result of that. I believe that God thinks of those filmmakers who follow Him the same way Hayao Miyazaki thought of his son's film. This is why I don't want to wish for films to fail: the effort behind it. But I will not root for something like The Emoji Movie to fail; no effort was put into such a product.
  12. These are some pretty good picks all across the board to be honest!
  13. Super Troopers is a cult classic comedy about policemen who get into all sorts of crazy shenanigans. It's a straight-up comedy for sure.
  14. I have nothing against either of the Star Wars films, but I do think their opponents are much better.
  15. I disagree. Gary Oldman was much less crass than Eddie Murphy. I think Gary Oldman did a fine job, and I think there were plenty of moments where he had nuance- that certainly couldn't be further from the truth in Eddie Murphy's case.
  16. I wish Annihilation was doing a lot better than it was. It is what it is. At least it can still reach Ex Machina's unadjusted gross.
  17. I disagree that it was that bad of a year for the actor category. Even if it is a dryer year than others, I still think there are many good performances (like Kaluuya and Franco and Oldman and Hunnam and McAvoy).
  18. 1. A Wrinkle in Time 2. Isle of Dogs 3. Tomb Raider 4. I Can Only Imagine 5. Strangers: Prey at Night 6. Paul, Apostle of Christ 7. Unsane 8. Ready Player One 9. Lene on Pete 10. God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness
  19. Annihilation March 2nd, 7:05 PM, 10%-15% full Pointe Theater 14, Wilmington, NC Previews Strangers: Prey at Night Truth or Dare Gringo Pacific Rim: Uprising A Quiet Place (gasps, "uh-uh") The audience was well-engaged throughout. Lots of gasps and murmurs. Positive remarks at the end.
  20. I believe that criticism is much different than persecution. Criticism is when people are going against the belief. Persecution is when the believers of the belief are personally attacked, an act that could range from name-calling to physical harm. I am of the belief that persecution is still persecution whether or not the born again believer sees it as such. I believe that peesecution is an action to be performed, not a concept to be grasped. If a thief stole something from me in a way that left me confused as to whether or not he was a thief, he is still a thief nonetheless. At least, that's what I think.
  21. I legitimately cannot wait to see this trailer. Mary Poppins was a beautiful film and if this sequel looks even half as good as the first, I will be stanning for it. It's poised to have a 'Greatest Showman on steroids' type of successful run in December.
  22. STX is playing it smart attaching two of its own films. But I'm excited to see how Adrift looks. Not many people will see Thoroughbreds but I'm sure the people who do see it will appreciate those trailers.
  23. I hope this is good news for the movies the company had to pull from schedule.
