WTF? Can you find any examples of a blockbuster rising on its opening Saturday in July? It didn't happen with Ant-Man, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes or Captain America.

Detective Conan sold 94,641 tickets by this time on April 16th, and that ended up with an opening weekend gross of ¥1.2 billion. It's not looking good for The Shallows, though. It's behind 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Cloverfield had a Friday debut that ate up some demand.

If there was any fatigue for talking cartoon animals, Pets wouldn't be as big as it is. I think this is confined to the Ice Age movies.

Are all big openers "events"? I thought the term was for the types of movies where people camp out on the sidewalk a day beforehand.

Today I learned that The Secret Life of Pets is an event movie.

Did anyone notice that Ice Age 5 is finally on movietickets? 7%!

You can't fault Fox for making this one, though. Did you even see what Ice Age 3 and 4 made ww? It's nothing at all like those other examples, where they only had one successful movie before.

A good comparison for The Shallows is 10 Cloverfield Lane. You can look here for that: http://mimorin2014.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-11972.html While 10 Cloverfield has more than 90,000 sampled seats, it was in 8th place rather than 7th place like The Shallows. This was because June isn't a busy time for movie theaters in Japan, so it wasn't competing with big releases. Anyways, 10 Cloverfield Lane sold about 10,000 sampled tickets on its first Saturday. The Shallows is going to have to do a lot better than that to be considered a success.
