  1. Jackie doesn't even have a distributor yet.
  2. Bourne overtook X-Men, Ghostbusters overtook Tarzan, and Bad Moms overtook IDR literally on the last day of the game. Add SS getting to $300m in the last minute and we got some amazingly close calls this year.
  3. Polytechnique is another very good Villeneuve. Centers on a school shooting but isn't at all exploitative, which is an achievement in itself.
  4. Even though there's only about 15 minutes of it, Scott Walker's score for The Childhood of a Leader might be my favorite this year. Magnificently dark and oppressive. The man should work in movies more.
  5. I suspect Affleck will win the most critics' awards but lose the Oscar. Still it's gonna be between him and Denzel.
  6. If it manages $3m next weekend it'll probably be able to crawl there. Plus they can always fudge it with Mag7.
  7. Hell or High Water is a possibility I'd say.
  8. A24's big contender seems to be Moonlight, then maybe How to Talk to Girls at Parties unless that gets delayed till next year. I'm hoping they give at least some push to The Lobster (so far it looks like it can dark horse its way into Screenplay, but nowhere else) and The Witch (this is much more of a pipe dream, but ideally the dialogue alone would give it a Screenplay nom, and if not that, how about Production & Costume Design at least?)
  9. 1. The Witch: A New-England Folktale 2. Hell or High Water 3. Zootopia 4. The BFG 5. Everybody Wants Some!! 6. The Lobster 7. Microbe and Gasoline 8. Don't Breathe 9. Midnight Special 10. The Nice Guys
  10. Spring Breakers is awesome. One of the few halfway idiosyncratic & unexpected choices there.
  11. They'll probably do both if they like the movie enough.
  12. Maybe there's hope for Kubo after all
  13. It's more or less exactly the list you'd expect after polling a couple hundred of today's international film critics. Both for better and for worse. Can't bring myself to have any strong feelings about it.
