  1. Bingo. But but Avatar has no cultural relevancy! Just shows that good hook worths more than cultural relevancy without one. They released stunning previews and movie was good too so WOM created an event.
  2. alsways "great" to see a movie that's gonna collapse (coughNightSwimcough) add more theaters while something that's doing well (ABY) losing 120. Holy shit that TCP drop! You weren't exaggerating! Poor Things is following The Favorite strategy to a T. Down to 500+ theaters and then expansion after the Oscar nominations. Since it kept 580 vs TF's 517 and TF expanded to 1.5K I assume PT's expansion will be slightly higher than that number maybe 1.6K-1.7K theaters. Probably depends on how crowded the month is. American Fiction is expanding bigly up to 600 theaters, It went up yesterday. Goidzilla also got slashed.
  3. Let them fight. Both are annoying af with their histronics and (melo)dramatic reporting and should be gone.
  4. Big question is if The Challengers will make more, less or the same. It will surely be compared to this run cause of Euphoria stars.
  5. It's passing 50M this weekend. How much more it is expected to earn after that point? Great reasult either way since many wrote it off.
  6. Becasue many times they misjudge the audience and make them unavaliable to people who would be interested. Saltburn is the latest example. Studio thought it was for one audience but it was for the other that wasn't reached in platform release. Sure, streaming corrects that now but it just shows how clueless they were whom to market it. Likewise, streaming cut Holdovers legs. Not only it got platform release but was sent to streaming too early because they didn't expect it to do well in wide release or something. It's very confusing.
  7. TCP is a toast after MLK weekend. It always performed when there's a short-lived external factor (Xmas day, MLK weekend) rather than on its own strength unlike ABY which is all its own doing not this or that life-saving booster.
  8. great point about Saltburn. Platform flop, streaming phenomenon. they didn't reach the right audience with platform BS. they targeted arthouse people but it turned out to be tailor made for TikTokers.
  9. pretty much this. if you think you have a masterpiece on your hands, sent it to festivals and then release it in 3000+ theaters. Sink or swim like the rest of them.
  10. if it wins SAG ensemble definitely watch out. It overperformed with SAG while Holdovers and Poor Things underperformed (no Ensemble for either, Ruffalo missing for AF's Brown). I think it's biggest hurdle is winning Script + Acting which is a must for movies that miss director and editing (don't expect AF to get either).
  11. I'm rooting for Barbenheimer. Do you know that this year will be 20 years since a movie that made over 300M in dom boxoffice and over 900M WW(1.1B to be exact) won? Small and medium movies win all the fuckin time and not because they are the best (CODA lol). So lets that not be this year. Well made little adult film should win Best Actress and Production Design cause they carry the said little film for adults. But Picture and Director should go to Barbie or Oppenheimer. No split nonsense.
  12. Likeable star circumvented apathy for the franchise somewhat. Why studios and talent agents advise their stars/clients to insult fans, say divisive or plain dumb shit is beyond me but it doesn't work. Going viral and putting butts in seats are 2 very different things.
  13. I wished that meger never happened. Yes, Searchlight and Cameron carry the quality these days. I think that Holdovers will win Supporting Actress (that's locked 100%), likely Original Script (now that Barbie vacated) and maybe an Actor (a toss between Giamatti and Murphy unless Murphy takes SAG cause he'll take BAFTA than it's over) but not Picture. It's a type of a movie you vote for cause you don't really like a movie whose Director is going to win (ROMA, TPOTD) so you look for comfy alternative. I don't think that Oppenheimer is like ROMA anbd TPOTD that needs an alternative. Foreign voters will support it I think.
  14. He was never in the closet tbh. He didn't have beards or say I'm totally not gay which is how (textbook) closet works. He just wasn't doing PDA with his bf but otherwise fans knew he was gay.
  15. And Nolan. He's like the biggest star in the world.
  16. Great point! I'm getting nervous. I don't want it to win Picture and Director cause I'm tired of little seen movies winning when Barbenheimer should take it one way or the other (Nolan/Oppenheimer or Barbie/Gerwig) and that it's Disney movie thanks to Fox merger irks me cause I'm enjoying Disney's bad 2023 and don't want saving graces. They mismanaged and should face the music 100%.
  17. yes TF and PT PTA is very similar. I guess Yorgos fans.
  18. Hard to say because of the different release schedule. PT started in more theaters and it already has holiday season behind it. TF in the same 18 days didn't even reach holiday boost stretch. I don't even know how you do the comparison, by days of release or where they were at the same time (Dec and Jan).
  19. It's chugging along fine but its PTA for so few theaters isn't impressive. It was only when it played in 8 theaters but dropped big with the first expansion and kept dropping.
  20. Looks like a cheap Tuesday + GG bump cause it dropepd 59% on Monday from previous Monday. It seems a short term thing. Luiz never proesents the full context.
  21. Perception vs numbers. WB may have numbers but The Flash damaged perception and then Barbie corrected it.
  22. Yeah, Barbie alone saved WB's face last year. All other successes weren't prominent enough to upstage The Flash bomb but Barbie megahit did.
  23. To be fair, Tony Stark/Iron Man was insanely popular cross generations despite being played by 39 years old actor in the first movie. Great characters are ageless, they connect. Same goes for Spiderman who is a teenager yet all generations like him. I don't think that teen Supers would automatically attract younger audience.
  24. We get it, you create outrage where there is none whenever someone doesn't like something you do. Echo chamber and all that.
