  1. Really surprised no one has done this yet. Its my favorite movie and it had a phenomenal boxoffice run earning 210m domestically and over 380m WW. It was also the last movie to gross over 200m until batman in 1989. This film remains one the quintessential 1980's pop culture icons and is probably the best example of how casting can make or break a movie.
  2. Surprised this one hasnt been posted yet. An epic trailer for The Mummy returns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyjOjHKgNOw
  3. Perhaps most impressively is that Jurassic park has slightly higher attendance than the Phantom menace.
  4. Truly a phenomenal run, Sylvester Stallone highest grossing film and his last film to gross over 100m until the expendables. Didnt this film also break the opening weekend record? Does anyone know why Rambo III declined so much from this one?
  5. After having a killer year in 2001 Universal was left with a week slate in 2002. Little did they know that this film would spawn one of their most important franchises. Despite only having an OW of 27m it went on to become their highest grossing movie of the year (domestically). It also made Matt Damon a star and was highly influential on the spy and action film genres. Discuss
  6. What was the supposed to be the biggest blockbuster of 1998 turned out to have a rather dissapointing run. While it certainly wasnt a flop by any means, as it made more than 3 times its budget worldwide, it certainly didn't justify the massive year long marketing campaign. Coming off of Independence Day it seemed like Roland Emmerich was on his way to becoming one of the biggest directors in hollywood and the king of disaster movies. But too much of the movie screamed like a Jurassic Park imitator and the special effects were undeniably hokey despite it having one of the largest budgets ever at the time. Sony was expecting it to break the OW record but it fell far short, coming in at #8, barely beating Deep Impact. Thoughts?
  7. Twister came out on the third weekend of May and Deep Impact came out on the second. The Mummy was what made the first weekend of the month what it is today.
  8. This and Independence Day are what made Will Smith a superstar. Perhaps most impressively it outgrossed The Lost World on the domestic front despite that movie destroying the Opening Weekend record. A blend of star power, impressive cgi and humor led this film to become a 90's classic. Discuss
  9. This film and Bruce Almighty are a testament to the fact that Carey is the largest comedic draw of the last 20 years. Not even Will Ferrell comes close
  10. Under 15% for sure, but it will likely go below 10%. Critics will be very fed up with this series
  11. What's the estimated budget for this one? Did the studio give James Cameron a blank check for this one? I imagine that even with a 500m budget this film would still be massively successful.
  12. In honor of the remake I thought it would be interesting to talk about these two movies. Lets just pretend the third one doesnt exist. The first Mummy basically made the first week of May the summer start that it currently is today when it debuted to what was at the time the 9th highest opening weekend of all time. It proved to have some staying power as not even Star Wars was able to kill off it legs and it finished at #8 for the year. The second movie debuted to the second highest opening weekend of all time but that proved to be short lived, and the legs weren't quite as good this time. Random fact, it was also the first movie to gross over 200m domestically and not finish in the top 5 for the year. Thoughts?
  13. I love Idris Elba but this looks generic as shit. Same old the planet is in peril Schtick we've seen a million times before. Although ive never read any of Stephen kings books so I'm not sure what to expect.
  14. I think it looks pretty funny, The Rock will be bringing his charisma and if Zac Enron can be as funny as he was in neighbors then I imagine it will do well.
  15. A movie about Harriet Tubman but instead of her being a peaceful person who leads slaves to freedom through the underground railroad, shes a gun wielding badass who leads a slave revolt and kills southern slave owners. Kind of similar in style/tone to Django Unchained
  16. Despite absolutely hating Lucy, I really want to see this but it will probably end up with John carter numbers.
  17. Its a really good movie but I felt a little underwhelmed after hearing all of the reviews gushing it with praise. I liked how it took a more personal approach to wolverine, and for being more character driven after the last couple of x-men movies became so reliant on spectacle. Although the action scenes in this are totally awesome, Laura's character is a total badass. The performances are all top notch and I have to give special props to the child actress who played Laura, she was surprisingly excellent. Unfortunately I felt that the plot was a bit of a letdown, the whole lets make "children into superweapons/breed mutants/make clones of existing mutants" feels like too much of a been there done there premise. This film does however do a good job with that, but i cant help but wish they hadn't done something that feels so contrived. For now I'll give it a B+, but that may go up after a rewatch.
