  1. Can't wait for the next Avengers movie to overtake it as the highest grossing disappointment. Only 1.8 billion? FFS 😦😧
  2. Personally, I'm wondering what inspires a woman to keep and repair her ex-boyfriend's hammer, dress up as him, and follow his career path. If an ex did that to me it'd be pretty creepy ngl. 🤔
  3. I suspect Eternals would have had an underwhelming performance even in ideal conditions (poor reception for a non-sequel movie). Though I do find it interesting that you decided to exclude Shang-Chi from the disappointments list, even though it only made 30M more than Eternals worldwide. But come on, man, Black Widow was simultaneously released on VOD, how could you possibly compare box office performance? All movies in 2021 were released in exceptionally challenging circumstances, I think it takes some motivation too go through and start judging movies that were running in theaters during a pandemic. They all did just fine in terms of search traffic in comparison to previous and later MCU hits, or to other 2021 movies. And based on that, it looks like tons of people just skipped watching them in theaters and picked them up later on Disney+. Disney+ more than anything hurt Disney's movies at the box office. See how Encanto made much less than Sing 2, despite Encanto becoming a cultural phenomenon with a song that hit #1 on the Hot 100 and dominating in streaming. Even lower down are Cruella, Jungle Cruise, and Raya.
  4. You can also just compare it to 2017, which by all accounts was a banner year for Marvel. MoM will outgross all of Marvel's catalog that year, domestically and worldwide, even without many markets. Domestically, it'll increase over 70% from the previous installment, which is more than any MCU followup save for No Way Home. In terms of MCU 2nd movies in a series, its #2 domestic (behind AoU) and #3 worldwide (also behind FFH). If you went a year or two back and gave us this movie's final totals, no one would call it a disappointment. The second way of looking at it is that reception was mixed and it obviously had a bad multi. So yeah, fair to say it fell short of what it could have potentially done. In that way it is a disappointment, a missed opportunity. Its a disappointment in comparison to what it could have done, not in comparison to other movies. But, alternatively, if you want to look at it as a sign of interest in the MCU, MoM's performance is definitely a show of strength.
  5. I'm also a fan of tracking movie interest through google trends. These are rough estimates, but it looks like search interest is much higher than Jurassic World Dominion's trailer, slightly higher than the first Doctor Strange trailer, perhaps a bit lower than Thor's first trailer (hard to gauge since Avatar's search interest is more spread out), and much lower than NWH's first trailer. Obviously none of this is ironclad, just one gauge of curiosity and interest.
  6. I actually did count the first Thor Love and Thunder trailer for all trailers on Youtube over 100k views, its at 117M.
  7. Its crazy just how far Harry Potter has been driven into the ground. In 2011 it had the 3rd highest grossing movie worldwide. Say what you will about DC, but they can still put out hits. Harry Potter is a joke. Its a shame because Fantastic Beasts could have been a fun, smaller scale series about Newt Scamander traveling the world. A prequel about Dumbledore and Grindewald could have been awesome. Instead we got disappointing, jumbled movies that fail to deliver on either of these premises. And yeah, Rowling's politics don't help. General audiences probably don't care, but I can tell you that the fans absolutely listen to what she has to say and they don't like what they're hearing. Harry Potter might be the most fan-driven franchise of them all, so demoralizing your fanbase, especially at a point where you're turning out shit movies, is really shooting yourself in a foot.
  8. I mean yeah, I'm rooting for the box office to do well generally, but I obviously play favorites (as do most people on here).
  9. Realistically MoM would only make a few million after day 45 (Civil War made 7 million domestic). So it's not going to have a huge effect on it's box office. Im not sure what putting it on streaming earlier actually gets Disney, but there isn't that much downside for this movie. I'm just concerned about future movies. How much will a 45 day window affect Black Panther 2? It would have cost the first one 50 million domestic. Is Disney just going to mutilate the run of every movie with legs? I'm hoping that they'll recognize the need to be flexible, but not counting on it. Having movies in theaters is a form of marketing in its own right. Every person who sees a movie in theaters will be a potential streaming customer. It helps strengthen the brand and reach new people. Marvel never would have gotten as broadly popular if it had just been on streaming, it just wouldn't have reached as wide an audience and never have gotten to it's full potential. Especially now that the streaming landscape is becoming more fragmented. If Disney wants to continue growing Marvel as a brand keeping movies in theaters (and ideally keeping them there long enough to reach their full potential) is necessary.
  10. It seems like DS2 does better on weekdays vs weekends compared to other Marvel movies. I think its because a lot of families that normally see Marvel movies are skipping it due to it not being kid friendly. Regardless, it is on track to pass 400M before the VOD release.
  11. While the box office has come back for big tent poles, the same isn't true for smaller movies. The number of new releases so far this year is less than half of what it was in 2019, similarly the number of movies appearing on the box office chart is less than half of what it was.
  12. Interest in Marvel and the MCU is quite high. The search traffic baseline since things started up again with Wandavision in January 2021, is noticeably higher than pre-Endgame. The pandemic obscured this in terms of Box Office gross, but the Marvel brand is very strong. They won't have any trouble getting people interested in their movies. Seeing what Thor is up to, and getting more of what Ragnarok delivered will be enough of a hook, and should get Love and Thunder a strong boost in OW from the previous installment.
  13. I do wonder just how far Disney is willing to take this 45 day window thing. Like, imagine if they put Avatar 2 on VOD after 45 days. That would be absolute madness lmao.
  14. Did end up watching MoM again with some work friends tonight (who because of unfortunate circumstances were unable to see it until now). The theater was surprisingly full. Also, have a good feeling about Jurassic World. Both my sister and my coworker, who haven't seen the last movie, are super hyped for it after seeing the trailer. I think its gonna blow expectations away. Avatar 2 also got very good responses.
  15. Civil War, Iron Man 3, and Age of Ultron we're all 2.2 - 2.3 so that is quite good.
  16. Good hold for MoM even accounting for Victoria day. It is now holding better than Civil War and if that continues it will cross 400M and then some.
  17. So kinda following Civil War since Monday. If it can follow Civil War over the weekend it would get 71M. Personally hoping for 70M, but we'll see.
  18. Yeah, this is one of the better examples of representation from Disney. They're there, its obvious. Its not a cop out or ambiguous like so many other Disney 'representation' attempts. But no one in the movie makes a big deal out it, there's no attempt to drag it out or glorify it. Its just a lesbian couple existing in the story just as any straight couple would. Anyone upset about this just doesn't want to see gay people in a movie.
  19. Yeah, I'll die on this hill for MoM. An amazing movie that goes all out from start to finish. I love Wanda as the villain. I love the moment where I realized 'wait, Wanda's the bad guy'. I love seeing her get to absolutely wreck shit. I love that the Illuminati is so fucking arrogant, thinking they can handle this 'little witch', only for them to realize they aren't even on the same level. 'Black Bolt could destroy you by opening his mouth' 'What mouth?' Fucking god, I'm shaken. I love that they let her be a legitimately terrible person in this movie, that they weren't afraid to go there. I like the portrayal of Doctor Strange as someone will to do anything for the greater good, and how sometimes that has terrible consequences, but sometimes that is exactly what you need. I love how at the end, Doctor Strange, the person who 'always has to have the knife' realizes the solution is to let America have the knife. He uses the Darkhold, but with the intention of empowering someone else because he realizes he doesn't have all the answers himself. Its a nice bit of character growth. I love that they brought Patrick Stewart back as professor X, and I think this movie did right by his character. He was the only one of the Illuminati to give Strange a second chance, it was such Professor X thing to do. Needless to say, the visuals and action are incredible and creative, everything I'd want out of reality bending, multiverse hopping magic. I guess the only thing that fell partially flat for me is Christine. I never bought them having any chemistry together in the first movie, so I'm not sold on her being Strange's 'one that got away'. Still, I think their dynamic works better in this movie, if only because so much of it is showing why they don't work as a couple. The horror movie aspect of this is overblown, but I can definitely see how the visuals were inspired from horror to great effect. Still this isn't a great movie for kids, which will no doubt hurt its box office, but honestly I'm just glad that we got such a fucking ride of a movie. I'll have to mull it over for a bit, but this is definitely going to be rated in the top tier of the MCU for me (a club that consists of the Winter Soldier, Endgame, Infinity War, Ragnarok, and the Avengers). I was honestly worried I wouldn't like it (I don't like horror movies, and had seen that this wasn't a home run, critically), so this movie massively exceeded expectations for me.
  20. Shang Chi was released mid-pandemic, so I can see the case for the sequel increasing more than one would expect.
  21. If we want to talk about contribution to the movie, we can even put aside the whole MCU Spiderman vs. TASM and Raimi movie thing altogether. Spiderman wouldn't even exist without Marvel. Not sure how you can say Marvel didn't contribute a large amount to a movie that features their characters. Any Marvel property doing well is a testament to their cultural impact regardless of how the property is licensed.
  22. This movie highlights the strengths of the superhero genre and why its become so dominant in our culture. The setup that NWH had from the previous movie was very strong (the identity reveal and being framed), so already NWH had a ton of potential, but where they went with it is just out of this world. The premise of this movie is absolutely bonkers, when you think about it for five seconds. Superheroes as a genre have so much flexibility with the setting, characters, and plots of the movies in a way that say... Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic World, and Fast and Furious don't/won't do. So we can get weird as fuck plots and audiences won't bat an eye at them.
