    Mulan seemed heavily anticipated though before the piracy situation happened. The trailers were much bigger in China than WW84. So it doesn't seem that surprising to me.

    Interesting to compare the mixed reaction in this thread to the current imdb rating (with a decent amount of ratings in, too). Well, probably good to keep my expectations in check before I watch.

    Joker was quite different from a usual superhero film and was marketed as such, which allowed it to draw new audiences.

    Also CM was like 8.7 on Maoyan compared to 8.0. And as you said the legs still weren't good.

    More "light comedy" superhero films seem to have trouble in China. Somehow Ant-Man avoids that though.

    I didn't think it was great but it's a 40-second clip. I'm sure you can find a 40-second clip of any MCU film that looks lame. Agree on the continuity point.

    It'll have been 9 years. The MCU brand is much bigger than any stigma remaining after that long.

    A small-scale MCU movie would have to be exceptionally bad to miss 400M. I mean really, truly putrid. Even in that case it would be dicey. And for F4 it would be even tougher since they are pretty large-scale heroes with lots of action.

    There are a number of confounding factors with WW84. To be honest there seems to be a pandemic-driven lack of hype in the West (this isn't based on anything objective, just the impressions I've gotten) and I can imagine that bleeding over to international performances given that these usually aren't independent. As was pointed out, the marketing hasn't been at the level blockbusters usually get. Add to that the piracy factor. I think Black Widow will give a much better indication of how Hollywood performs in China in the future.

    I mean TFA had "solid" legs in China despite low scores, and we saw what happened there. Ratings seem to be better indicators of reception than legs.

    It's a little bit of a weird situation though with the delay (you'd expect the WTS to be inflated in a situation like this), but should have a monster run regardless.

    The comments on these articles are some of the purest cases of "comment first, read later" I have ever seen. They accuse Villeneuve of wanting people to "kill themselves" to watch his movies.

    I took a look through my local Cinemark and the sales for Christmas Day at least are...not insignificant. Not huge, but there may be some numbers here worth tracking. But anything I can get would require some time after my finals are done and I can adjust the scraper to account for Covid unavailables.
