Yeah they do this a lot. After Black Adam flopped, they had the trades drop articles about Dwayne Johnson to make him look bad (for serving alcohol at a premiere for his PG-13 films?) after the Snyder Cut fiasco, they had the trades drop articles on how Snyder is some Lex Luthor villain (for being rude to studio execs).

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire | March 22, 2024
TheDude391 replied to Eric the Fall Guy's topic in Box Office Discussion
I adore the first Ghostbusters but its a franchise/fanbase that has severely misremembered the original film. 2016 Ghostbusters was quite bad but it was MUCH closer in tone/style to the OG than the other films. Completely irreverent comedy where SNL guys riff on what if bug exterminators but for ghosts. -
Having seen the film, I'm not surprised by this response. Expect the same in NA when it drops in December too. Without getting into plot specifics, this is VERY different from all of Miyazaki's other films. Pacing is slower, structure is far more stream of consciousness and dreamy, surreal elements amped up. I loved the film personally but I had next to no clue what it was really about/what was going on until near the end. It's also sorta contingent on the audience having "some" awareness of Miyazaki as the film is reflective in certain ways, it's not newcomer friendly.

Huh, they seemed like reasonable ideas to help the union imo. Bottom up pay especially so the struggling actors get their paycheck first. The SAG is never getting that flat % off each subscriber like they advocated for, their streaming residual deal will be similar to WGAs, only based on how successful it is. Removing the $1m caps would at least help bridge the gap between the deal they'll get and the deal they want.

The "enthusiast" market is absolutely thriving right now, lately it's been an amazing time for physical media collectors. The major studio releases are getting slimmer and worse but your Criterions, Vinegar Syndromes, Kino Lorbers, Umbrellas, etc. are killing it and starting to license out the bigger studio stuff more and more as they shift away from it themselves (for the better).

Was semi hoping this might still be okay as a fan of DGG's Halloweens (minus Kills) but I found this to be absolutely abysmal. I almost walked out I was so bored. The most shocking thing? That the original was way more graphic, vulgar and disturbing than anything here! Believer was borderline PG-13 outside of reusing the C-word line from the original.

Interesting anecdote from the article though: "Turmoil aside, the sequel might just work at the box office. The first “Aquaman” also was ho-hum in early testing and found its footing in postproduction. A studio source says “Aquaman 2” is following a similar trajectory. Early tracking shows strong interest and puts the film’s opening on par with the first “Aquaman.” “Everybody’s down on DC, but there is a chance, especially with the limited competition during the holiday season, that ‘Aquaman’ could still play like gangbusters because of lack of product,” says Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Sometimes the right film at the right time is all you need.”"
