Weekend Estimates (Deadline) The Lorax - 70M+
Cochofles replied to Taylor's topic in Numbers and Data
It's settled. The box office is on fire and The Avengers will open with 250 million. TDKR will open with half a billion. Avatar 2 will open with 950 million. -
Early Friday Numbers (The Lorax - 17.5M; Project X - 8.2M)
Cochofles replied to CJohn's topic in Numbers and Data
Bravo. People can say "THIS FILM WILL ROCK!" 400 times in one thread, and nobody bats an eye, but if you say "I think it will fail, because of this and that..." say...10 times in one thread, you are "trolling" and you "hate" the film. (And they will make up stuff and invent "facts" about your alleged trolling)Yawn.Just ignore them. You are not breaking any rules and you are not insulting fans of the film. You are fine. -
Sometimes films actually exceed their budgets, and still fail to make any sort of impact. An actor's name is not put above the title of a 40 million dollar film so it grosses 50 million, you know what I'm saying? They expect 'stars' to draw in large crowds. Amanda is being groomed and positioned by studios as the next box office sweetheart, a girl-next-door with cross-gender appeal, but it's not working, clearly. Even in sappy romantic dramas, she is 1 out of 2. (Dear John's success, by the way, had more to do with Channing Tatum's appeal to teenage girls than anything else)

Also "In Time". AT least in the USA it was ignored by audiences.

How can she be the "next Meryl Streep, but with more BO pull," when, A- She is not even in the same galaxy as Meryl, talent-wise, and B- Streep's last 5 films have grossed over 400 million dollars, while Seyfried's last five films have grossed a little under 200 million? Not to mention that the appeal of Mamma Mia!, in which they actually worked together, was all about ABBA's songs, the Broadway musical's worldwide popularity, and Meryl Streep.

He also sounds like a little whiny boy. Boys also whine, you know. ;-)

Interesting how The Rock's fortunes have changed for the best, box office-wise.

It's really interesting; once again, this is more proof that the internet is a smoke-and-mirrors, self-aggrandizing delusion-creator. The vocal armchair critics post on message boards and truly believe that what they type reflects America's taste: For example, if you went by online buzz, you'd think that Ryan Reynolds is a huge box office draw (I mean, even the studios believe online hype when they hinted at an actual GL sequel) and Tatum Channing is absolutely hated by people. Yet, box office numbers prove the opposite. (And seriously, anyone who believes that The Proposal was a hit because of RR and that Safe House is a hit because of RR needs to live in a looney bin)

Damn, I always thought Warrior was the kind of "male tear-jerker" that would connect with audiences, like Field of Dreams, Brian's Song, Jerry Maguire, Rocky, et al. I loved it, and I still don't understand why it failed at the box office. It had two hot men that women and gay men could drool over, but whose screen personas were manly and "cool" enough for straight men to like and not feel ashamed of being seen getting out of the theatre showing those films (as opposed to, say, Robert Pattison or Channing Tatum). It had romance, sports action, family drama, tear-jerking without schmaltzy manipulation, and it was in my opinion, decently directed. I thought it was the perfect recipe for a crowd-pleaser.

Reese should do something as caustically funny and black-hearted as ELECTION. She would have nailed Young Adult, I bet. I really want to see her do more Elections and Walk the Lines and less Sweet Home Alabamas and Just Like Heavens.

Yum yum, gimme sum!

Who cares about J2. When will The Rock do a steamy romantic thriller? I want to see him naked and sweaty and being dangerous and sexy. Maybe a remake of "Don't Talk to Strangers"?
-
Oh, we'll have a superhero overperformer undoubtedly: The Dark Knight Rises.
-
Absolutely. Even after all the very well-informed posts I have seen explaining certain things, I am still not buying this whole "THE BOX OFFiCE IS IN AN UPSWING! OMG! GR WILL MAKE 150 m, AVENGERS WILL OPEN WITH 200 M, et al" thing. It all comes down to films that make people want to see them, at least on opening weekend. I am not feeling this GR thing.

Jennifer Lopez is a better singer than Aretha Franklin. Wait, what???

Does anyone still lend any credence to internet talk? The internet is a curious beast; when enough fanboys parrot the same sentiment over and over, they start believing that the whole world mirrors their beliefs. If we went along with the vociferous internet pop culture quasi-cognoscenti, we would believe that: [*]Everybody hates Titanic and Avatar [*]Serenity and Firefly were amazingly brilliant masterpieces that did not flop [*]Absolutely nobody liked the Star Wars prequels [*]Thor and Captain America were critically adored, Oscar-worthy, and deeply loved by everyone and their granpa, not just comic book fanboys. [*]Only teenage girls go watch the Twilight films, and any guy who watches those films is gay, "weird", or pussy-whipped.
