  1. Only 3 countries? Guessing those are Iceland, Croatia and Spain, meaning no outdoor Ireland North/Riverlands/Pyke scenes at all this season?
  2. Musker and Clements may very well deliver a wonderful, magical movie for the ages but even their finest (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) aren't exactly BP baits. So I'd be pleasantly surprised if Moana does end up with a nom.
  3. Yup, and how much does the score from musicals not being eligible for Original Score rule suckkk? Christophe Beck's score is criminally underrated.
  4. Huh? The 9 nominees thing started only from the 2012 ceremony. 2010 and 2011 were ten nominees. Is there something I'm not aware of that happened between 2011 and 2012?
  5. Ugh, that movie was such a letdown. Shut up HFPA for rewarding mediocrity!
  6. Lol, Disney placed its bets on the wrong horse last year. I'm sure the nomination number would have increased to ten with Frozen getting in if Disney had just pushed it hard enough for a BP nom. But then again, Disney never foresaw The Phenomenon happening at all.
  7. Well, both are exactly in the same range for me: charming, sometimes wonderfully so, but overrated by some. Both equally deserved nominations though.
  8. Well, they could constantly change the number of nominees each year depending on the crop like how they do for BP nowadays (I mean, they didn't think much of having only four BAF nominees last year, which entailed shutting out MU entirely). If they can reduce the nominee number based on quality, shouldn't the inverse be true as well i.e. increase the number if there are more quality films that deserve to be recognised? I just think it was harsh leaving Tangled out in the cold like that, especially now considering the movie's impact on WDAS's recovery.
  9. The fact that they have that stupid "X number of animated movies need to be submitted for us to have 3+ nominees" rule for Best Animated Feature is a perfect example of the Academy being complete assholes to the medium. Oh well, at least animation has it better than poor stunt folks, so I guess that's... something?
  10. It has to be a culmination of many factors. A ground breaking piece of work in a year with not so impressive live action movies (2011 comes to mind). I have a feeling though that once the Academy is filled with a majority of members born during or after 1982-1985 (who would have still been children when the Disney Renaissance and the rise of Studios Ghibli and Pixar occurred), is when animated films will finally get the proper respect that they deserve.
  11. The Academy is not the Academy if they don't intermittently demonstrate how out of touch they can be at times. TDK snub and Crash over Brokeback Mountain are the other most major examples that come to mind.
  12. Well in that case, Monsters University should have won last year! Or at the very least, scored a nom. While I don't disagree that the actual animation is given a lot of emphasis, the Academy's decisions on picking the nominations seems more nuanced than that. The fact that Lego heavily used live action to give its climax emotional weight may have not sat well with a lot of the decision makers. This was an issue I had with the movie winning over the other animated films that solely relied on animation to connect with audiences. Something that I had voiced way back in February when the #LegoOscarLocked! gun jumping began.
  13. I was talking about a last minute upset because the Globes cemented Argo as the frontrunner with one fell swoop for ZD30 and co. It still baffles me that fucking Argo happened over the rest of the 2012 nominees. Hollywood is such a circle jerk. Truth.
  14. Ugh, Boyhood better not miss out on BP after coming so close now. The upsets should have happened for Argo and/or 12YAS.
  15. Maybe Academy thought the live action scenes hampered Lego's climax? I dunno. If they do focus a lot on technical aspects (reason being for The Boxtrolls inclusion), then I could see why they would have a problem with the live action scenes playing such a prominent part of the movie's resolution.
  16. Yeah. BoL was superior to Boxtrolls. My ideal five: Big Hero 6 Book of Life The Lego Movie Song of the Sea The Tale of the Princess Kaguya Yeah, I would have snubbed HTTYD2. Love how the field is still open this year though vs. last year when only deluded haters couldn't see Queen Elsa total domination!
  17. Congrats on the early call, Films. Kaguya better win this now! C'mon Academy, pull through for Ghibli and 2D animation!
  18. Aw for Razzie Redeemer award. The fact that it's never been undeservingly obnoxious and cruel is why I love the Razzies. Lol @ Nicola Peltz. Already two-time nominee.
