  1. And I watched Nausicaa! I'm glad I did because I really liked the medieval era meets post-apocalyptic sci-fi world created by Miyazaki for the film (apparently it was based on his manga of the same name). I usually am not a big fan of post-apocalyptic stories so the imaginative world of Nausicaa was something refreshing. I also really dug the Giant Warrior idea and how it was an analogy for WMDs. A little precursor to Grave of the Fireflies, I suppose. Having said that, I can see why some consider it to be a rough version of the Miyazaki epic to come 13 years later, Princess Mononoke. Unlike Mononoke, the central theme of man vs. nature in Nausicaa is fairly simplistic. Princess Kushana seems like a less developed version of Lady Eboshi (favorite Ghibli character ever!). Even Hisaishi's score is similiar to the score in Mononoke. I could actually imagine the notes in the Nausicaa main theme progressing into The Legend of Ashitaka theme. Speaking of the score, damn that outdated 80s' synth music would always take me out of the movie whenever it would start playing abruptly over the background. All in all, a solid B film. Not quite the masterpiece as Ghibli's finest, and the problem with Nausicaa is that there is a directly comparable masterpiece in Princess Mononoke, which reflects Miyazaki's more matured and nuanced outlook on the theme of nature versus the evolution of human civilization. But Nausicaa is better than Ghibli's weakest and definitely warrants a watch for Miyazaki lovers.
  2. Seriously insane. With Spongebob and Cinderella, it wasn't even as if audiences were really starved for family fare.
  3. Blade doesn't have to be R-rated. The first time I came across the character was in the 90's Spider-Man animated series, and they managed to perfectly portray the dark aspects in a kids' show without going over the top in gore nor taming it down either.
  4. Where her breakout scene involved... opening a door. Haven't watched Home yet and I'm sure it won't be all that but at least it utilizes her as more than a glorified extra.
  5. More than anything, this serves as an excellent reminder of the brilliance that was Blackwater.
  6. 1. Inside Out 2. Avengers: Age of Ultron 3. Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice 4. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 2 5. Aloha 6. Pitch Perfect 2 7. Jurassic World 8. Crimson Peak 9. The Peanuts Movie 10. Paper Towns
  7. Kind of sad for Cinderella. But expected seeing the number of little kids getting restless at my showing. I think the reason the original animated movie was so huge was because of the goofy animal hi jinks whose prominence was highly reduced in this version.
  8. Life of Pi is basically Jesus Take the Wheel with a tiger instead of Carrie Underwood. Clearer now?
  9. So I take it you are on Team Snow White? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ekLcUyDWaU
  10. If Stannis had a POV, he'd probably be my favorite non-Tyrell/Tyrion character.
  11. Benioff and Weiss confirm the show will spoil many elements of the novels, including the series ending
  12. I think Minions will sneak away with a nod. Wouldn't be surprised if The Good Dinosaur got snubbed instead, especially if it pales in comparison to Inside Out. Kind of like a DM2 getting nominated over MU situation.
  13. They don't exactly hate fairytales either. Wondering how huge a Disney princess musical set in Japan would be. China OTOH would go crazy for some Hollywood studio produced action/superhero movie based in China with a Chinese protagonist.
  14. Yeah no. Despite all of her faults, it was clear as day that Lady Eboshi was the true herald of the future with the violent and unsophisticated forest gods rapidly falling into irrelevancy and oblivion, a fate even Moro accepted for herself and her kind, because they couldn't keep in step with the march of progress. The explicit theme is of balance between the two worlds of course, but that equally underlines the importance of industrialization as much it does of conservation, if not more so given the attention Miyazaki offers to Eboshi and her empowerment of society's disenfranchised. It's really quite similar to Avatar only in the way Gravity is "really quite similar" to Armageddon. Really? That's surprising because the reason I've avoided watching Nausicaa for so long is because I've constantly been hearing that it is a more simplistic view of the conflict between nature and industrialization/capitalism than Mononoke, which made me think Nausicaa would be disappointing and one of my least favourite Ghiblis, especially as Mononoke is one of my favourite films. Not just among my favorite Ghibli films or favorite animated films but favorite films. Your post has definitely aroused my curiosity for Nausicaa though. Think I should really give it a watch now.
  15. I'm personally waiting for an Emma Thompson penned Sense and Sensibility... and Soul-Sucking Vampires
  16. Well, the main object of James's harassment and ego trip is a female director so that doesn't fit into the sexism theory. Also, nobody bashes the good female authors such as JK Rowling and Suzanne Collins (nobody sane i.e.).
  17. Cinderella didn't have 3D to boost its numbers like the other three movies. Since the gap between the OW numbers for Cinderella and Oz is not that big, I was wondering if it actually sold more tickets than Oz.
  18. Thanks for this. So does this mean Cindy sold more tickets than Oz for OW?
  19. Did you know "Hipster Ariel" is a thing? On a more serious note though, ONE Birdman role does not typecasting make. Emma's played the bubbly, naive and idealistic young teen before to charming effect.
