This is true. I remember how there was a wave of positivity in the weeks leading up to its release, with people crying, "M. Night is BACK!". The promos were spectacular and backed the hype. So then the actual quality of the movie when it opened was a big, shocking blow. HATED it that the humor of the series was surgically removed from the film. Shyamalan is an enemy of fun or what? And Dev Patel should have been Sokka instead of Zuko. In fact, if there was a tribe that could have been whitewashed without much controversy, it was the Fire tribe. So of course that had to be the only colored tribe in the movie!

Lol I didn't realize that the exact same discussion was going on in the Smaug thread until now. Still, 300 page book = trilogy where each movie is 2.5 to 3 hours SCREAMS cash grab on WB's part for greenlighting it, no matter how huge PJ's boner is for the source material.

I dunno. Elongating a 300 page book into three 2 and a half to three hour movies is as cash grabby as they come. It's the same reason why the "Part 1's" of the final book adaptations of YA novels tend to underperform, like DH1 and BD1.

Everyone I personally know who watched it are hatin' on it. Including fans. So I don't know where this "good WOM" idea is coming from. It is neither reflected in what I am seeing or in the actual BO numbers.
