Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

Is Jai Ho related to Slumdog Millionaire?

No more than "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" is related to "Chor Machaye Shor", or "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na" is related to "Aa Gale Lag Jaa" that is to say, not in the least. It just took its title from the lyrics of a song from an older movie.

India is only behind US, China, UK, Japan and France in Box Office earnings for 2013.

Imagine how higher it would be if not for the weak rupee.

One major reason Hollywood still doesn't pander to the Indian market is that 90% of the big hits and spending is on domestic movies. Especially with movies of so many languages being made.

Also culturally and socially, hollywood movies don't appeal to the general Indian audience.

Jai Ho breakdown according to AddaToday:

Friday - 17.5 crore

Sat - 16.6

Sun - 26.25

Mon - 9.5

Tue - 7.5

Total Approx: 77.35 cr.

Let's see how it holds up until Friday, then it's got One By Two to compete with - which shouldn't be too hard. Then Haseeh Toh Phasee rolls around the week after.

February wide release films are:

Haseeh Toh Phasee

Gunday

Highway

Shaadi Ke Side Effects

I don't see any of them being 100 crore films. In fact, we might have to wait until June or even longer to get our 2nd 100 crore film (1st being Jai Ho)

A month out and I'm not all that impressed with Dhoom 3's run anymore.  Just fell apart after that initial few days, should have blown past 300.  Feel like Chennai Express would have done similar business in the same release period.

It did decent as the post first week gross as a % of week 1 is better than CE and K3.

But yeah, it had an unparalleled release date. With 3 weeks and 2 holidays, CE and K3 would have gone higher.

CE had 2 holiday bumps and 1 open week.

K3 had 1 holiday bump and 2 open weeks.(ignoring satya 2)

D3 had 2 holiday bumps and 3 open weeks.(ignoring sholay 3D and joe.b.c as they were small releases)

Dhoom 3 Christmas bump(week 1) + New Years bump(week 2) + 3 open weeks

189cr 1st week. Added 95.3cr(50.4% of week 1) more in the rest of the run - Yaariyan + Ishqiya in 4th weekend

Krissh 3 Diwali bump(week 1) + 2 open weeks

166.42cr in 1st week. Added 78.5cr(47.2% of week 1) more in the rest of the run - Ram Leela in 3rd weekend

CE Eid bump(week 1) + Independence day bump(week 2) + 1 open week

156.7cr in 1st week. Added 71cr(45.3% of week 1) more in the rest of the run - OATIM2 in 2nd weekend

Dhoom 3 burnt off a lot of demand during Christmas holidays. Everybody who wanted to see it saw it during the holidays, there was no reason to wait.

Salman should do another film with Katrina.

Ek The Tiger was his last good effort.

I think Dabangg and ETT were 2 good Salman films since his great run started in 2010. Everything else was below par. Ready was atrocious.

In 10 days, 'Jai Ho' has grossed 95.2 crore according to BOI and 102.6 crore according to Taran Adarsh. So that's $20-21m in USD. It can gross another 15-20 crore from here.

Overall a disappointing run worthy of a disappointing film.

Yeah extremely disappointing considering how movie business is growing monthly. a 100cr film 6 months later is as good as 110cr film.

Ra.One, Don2, Ready..these films made about 110-120cr 3 years back. Now OMG, Khaani, Bhaag Milka, etc. all very well received films but without a superstar can make 90, 100cr.

So Jai Ho with < 120cr is hugely disappointing. It's at 102cr after 10 days. So It has 4 days of decent gross remaining before competition starts Friday onwards. Will add about 15cr more. Had 2 open weeks luckily, or would have made about 105cr.
