Over the past few years people here kinda stopped caring about the critics awards after the SAG/Globe announced their nominees, so whatever.

grr they can't possibly truly think gravity is the best movie out there , i havent thought about that movie since i saw it 

 

 

but happy for HER because joaquin phoenix is in it

GG noms mean less and less these days. SAG noms only provide some clarity, it's not until the winners that things can change big.

GG is important because it is so high profile. People can bitch about the voting process and the voters but no one can deny the clout it has in the awards season.

Actually the mid-major critics serve a purpose, to provide a sanity check on the NY/LA/Chicago/Boston/DC elites.

 

For example, early out the gate ZD30 steamrolled EVERYTHING. Everyone was convinced it would win BP no problem. But, prior to the Guild Miracle, a bunch of the mid-level critic groups began awarding BP and/or BD to Argo, closing the gap in total critic points even if they didn't carry the same luster or notice.

 

So, they do matter quite a bit, because they can demonstrate the weakness of so-called frontrunners.

I'm really not rooting for one movie to take everything this year, or even a specific category. There's too much greatness out there that I'd be happy with a lot of the potential contenders winning.
