Impact
I remember reading a comment about the 1995 Oscars on how Apollo 13 was the only traditional Oscar film. (IE-major event in history, huge cast, big names all around, big budget, popular film, period film)
CoolioD1
It's funny how no one really thought of The Artist as a film "designed to win Oscars" until Weinstein picked it up....
Impact
I don't see how making a film silent would of made it a better film.
rockNrollaDIM
I'm not sure if I heard of it before Weinstein picked it up.. but that's what I've thought about it since the moment I saw the trailer. Just some highbrow gimmick aimed squarely at Oscar voters.
Impact
The Oscar voters in the 1950s/1960s would be ashamed of them nominating a silent film!
ravon80
The difference between last year's contenders vs. this year's contenders is that it seems the majority of this year's crop seem like they were made specifically to be considered for Oscars, not to engage the masses. Last year's contenders were all high in quality but also high in entertainment value and yes they did have variety... Drama, dramedy, horror, sci-fi, animation, western... King's Speech was arguably the only cookie cutter piece in there. You hit it right on the nose. I'm not sure if I heard of it before Weinstein picked it up.. but that's what I've thought about it since the moment I saw the trailer. Just some highbrow gimmick aimed squarely at Oscar voters. QFT. The Artist is Oscar-bait 101. Just because black-and-white and/or silent films are rare doesn't mean that when one comes along that it's any less the Oscar bait for it. For the record, I'm not calling the movies in contention bad or anything (except The Help...ugh), but they're nothing to get excited about. Box office performances are sub-par, the genres are predictably Oscar-ish, and the movies themselves just aren't anything that exciting. Ezen Baklattan
The Artist is clearly appealing to the Oscar folk, but it's also, in my opinion, one of the most entertaining films of the year.
baumer
I saw The Artist today. What a joke that this is being mentioned for best picture. What is so good about it? It's quite awful imo. There's a reason silent pictures went away in the 30's, cuz most of them are not good films......you can add The ARtist to that list. Impact
As I said-Oscar voters from previous decades be ashamed that there nominating a silent film.
Ezen Baklattan
To me, The Artist is a bit like a Pixar film. It takes a simple, and possibly outlandish, idea, and molds it into a story filled with surpluses of humor and heart. Baumer didn't like it, so it helps push my point further. Impact
Personally I want Hugo and War Horse to be the frontrunners. And I wish MI4 had a chance at something...
Ezen Baklattan
I'd be happy if Hugo was a frontrunner. If it were up to me, though, Drive and 50/50 would be serious contenders.
ravon80
I'd be happy if Hugo was a frontrunner. If it were up to me, though, Drive and 50/50 would be serious contenders. See, now those are movies to get excited about, that deserve the recognition, but won't get it.
Impact
Well I do wish that more popular films could make it in....
CoolioD1
If it were up to me stuff like Rango, Mission Impossible and Tintin would be best picture contenders. And Tarsem Singh would totally be in the conversation for Best Director. ..... So maybe it's better that it's not up to me then.
Impact
If it was up to me-Clint Eastwood would of won best actor in 2008... Not that it would be a bad thing though
CoolioD1
Oh God, that would have been awful. I figuratively jumped for joy when he missed out on a nom that year.
Noctis
Changeling should havebeen nominated for Best Picture, and Jolie should have won Best Actress.
