Hobbit DOS's 3rd weekend will be right up there with the older LOTR movies and that's after adjusting for inflation.

I wish you were right, but that is not exact. A bit apples and oranges. 3rd weekend of LOTR movies was the weekend after New Year, considerably worse for box office. Even King Kong was able to make a 30 million 3rd weekend adjusted. The weekend after Christmas, both TTT and ROTK did 67 million adjusted. FOTR 55 million.
