2014 Academy Awards: The Official Thread (ALL NOMINEES IN THE FIRST POST)

Yep take away the 3D and you have a lack luster film as a product...Unlike films like Avatar, you cant enjoy Gravity as much without seeing it on the big screen. Hence why so many say this film sucks on HV and wondering what all the hooplah is about.  The 3D version is certainly mesmorizing, but in character development and story and engaging without the 3D element it suffers greatly.

The thing is I don't have anything against straight forward narrative and simple plot because Gravity is a survival in space featuring mostly a lonely character trying to stay alive. There's not so much you can do to retain audience's attention with that kind of setting. That's why Cuaron emphasized on the amazing visuals and Sandra Bullock's acting to reflect the psychology more than relying on an elaborate script with many layers, twists and turns at every corners.

But compared to the layers and shades of grey 12 Years A Slave is displaying (through the development of the plot, through the main characters, through editing and pacing "Solomon's hanging scene", the sense of despair and ugliness that lingers, the whole range of deeds mankind is capable of from good to bad and everything in the middle, the whole range of feelings one can experience from happiness to absolute misery to hope again), Gravity really feels superficial in its treatment.

You know I found it amusing Blanchett did not thank Woody Allen  (Can you blame her?)

She did thank him, very quickly.

it won 3

Yes, sorry, I meant 3.

Come on, Gravity sweeps most Oscars and people still whine it didn't grab one more Oscar to the shitload of Oscars it bagged tonight?! Get over it, Gravity has already all the tremendous success and awards, it's not like it got horribly snubbed or shutout (AH cough).

12 Years A Slave deserved it.

Let's be real for a moment. Best Picture and the acting awards are the only ones people ever talk about years down the line. How often do you hear people talking about Cabaret, which won 8 oscars? Not much, because it missed BP, the one people remember.

Then again how many people talk about Out of Africa?

It just depends on how influential the movie is.  Plus, it won directing.

So people will forget about Gravity because it didn't win best picture Oscar?

Hell, people already forget about The Artist and Crash and they won. That doesn't much. Gravity is a popular movie, let's not judge too early how memorable it might be at this point. Only time will tell.

Well I will give you that Gravity will be considered influential, regardless of the BP snub. But it's just frusterating to win that many and not the one that everyone pays attentions to. Not to mention it makes ZERO sense. The movie with the best directing, cinematography, editing, sound, and effects isn't the BP? Lol.
