China holds key to international box office race

31 August, 2012 | By Jeremy Kay

If the sterling performance of The Amazing Spider-Man in China continues through Sunday, the webslinger could end the dominance of The Dark Knight Rises. However the latter — the reigning champion for the past six sessions — also opened in China and it will be a close contest.

Spidey grossed more than $10.6m through Sony Pictures Releasing International from his first two days in China as the overall international running total climbed to more than $450m.

Sony also has Total Recall in play. The sci-fi reboot opens in approximately 19 territories including the UK and will be a contender this weekend.

The Dark Knight Rises has amassed more than $9m in China since it also opened there on Monday and has grossed more than $535m in total through Warner Bros Pictures International.

Universal Pictures International opens The Bourne Legacy in around 14 territories including Russia and Sweden. The thriller has grossed $48m. Moonrise Kingdom on an early $3m opens in Australia and New Zealand.

Ted stands at $160.1m, while ParaNorman on $13.9m opens in Singapore. Savages arrives in Hong Kong.

Paramount Pictures International’s Tadeo Jones opens in Spain. DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3 stands at $337.3m and The Dictator has reached $113.5m.

Fox International’s Ice Age: Continental Drift stood at $668.4m as of Aug 28. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on $47.2m arrives in Mexico, Spain and South Korea.

The Expendables 2 opens in Germany and Austria. Prometheus on $217m opens in China while The Watch on $4.7m debuts in the UK.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International executives reported that Brave has reached $222.9m

Does anybody happen to know where to find tables of historical exchange rates for US Dollars ($) to other currencies?I can't find any, only Yen. But I need many more...pretty much any other currency would do me good. If you know of any, please let me know. Mainly need 1980s, but 70s and 90s also welcome. Thanks

For the 90's you could use this, I don't know about earlier than that.

Dark Knight Rises prevails in seventh international session

2 September, 2012 | By Jeremy Kay

China returned more than $63m from two Hollywood smashes in a single week as Warner Bros’ Batman finale and Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man went week head-to-head. Italy was the kingmaker as a solid first week enabled The Dark Knight Rises to rule overall.

However the impact of China will be the chief talking point. The booming territory’s influence cannot be overstated and demonstrates a perhaps unprecedented ability to shape the box office landscape.

The Dark Knight Rises took approximately $28.5m from 4,100 screens in the first week in the Asian territory. Including $8.8m from 836 in the first six days in Italy, the crime thriller brought in a further $46.4m from 10,156 screens in 64 markets to reach $574m internationally and more than $1bn worldwide.

The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $33.7m through Sony Pictures Releasing International, driven mostly by a muscular first week in China that delivered a number one rank and $33.3m since Monday’s launch (Aug 27). The Friday to Sunday portion accounted for $14.5m. The superhero romp remains active in 59 markets and stands at $475.3m overall.

Total Recallbrought itself to the cusp of $100m after four weekends, as $13m from 5,282 screens in 74 markets propelled the running total to $98.7m. The sci-fi reboot opened top in the UK on $4.4m from 701 screens and added $1.3m in the third weekend in France from 534 for $8m. Total Recall has grossed $12.6m in Russia and $12.2m in Japan, both after four.

The Bourne Legacy surged to $61.3m thanks to a $12.6m session through Universal Pictures International from 3,550 sites in 37 territories. It opened top in four of 14 new territories, led by Russia on $3.8m from 660. The UK generated $1.2m from 459 in the third weekend for $15.7m. Brazil and South Korea are among the wave of 27 new territories this week.

Ted grossed $7.1m from 2,223 in 34 for $168.4m and after five weekends stands at $26.6m in Germany and $44.1m in the UK, where it ranks as Universal’s second biggest release since 2007 behind Mamma Mia. It opened top in Thailand on a notable $603,000 from 41.

ParaNormanadded $3.1m from 2,400 in 20 for an early $17.5m. Laika Entertainment’s follow-up to Coraline has taken $2.7m in Russia and $1.9m in France, both after two sessions. The Expendables has grossed $16.8m in Russia after three and $6m in Italy after the same amount of time. Step Up Revolution stands at $19.8m from Universal territories. Moonrise Kingdom opened in Australia on $616,000 from 51 including $174,000 in previews.

DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3 grossed $8.9m from 2,740 sites is 34 countries through Paramount Pictures International and stands at $388m. The Dictator added $1.5m from 913 cinemas in 17 markets and has reached $115.3m.

Local animated title Tadeo Jones opened top in Spain on an excellent $3.1m from 326 locations. The opening day was the best all summer for an animated title and the best for a Spanish release so far in 2012.

Fox International’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter took $6.1m from 2,399 in 21 markets to raise the tally to $53.9m following a $1.7m number one debut in Mexico on 1,044 screens. It opened in South Korea on $1.7m from 337 to rank as the top Hollywood film in release and debuted in Spain in second place on $1.2m from 533.

I thought Russia would be higher. Oh well. UK was only 1.2? Must have taken a dive in Australia. Here's to breaking out in Germany, France, South Korea and Japan.

I am not even sure what happened over here. Bourne, Expendables, Total Recall... all at the same time, just too much for such a small market where not much people go to the movies. Brave was raped on Thursday by the movie I will talk next, it didn't exist, but Sunday was very strong. And, of course, Morangos com Açúcar (Strawberries with Sugar, based on a very popular series for young teen girls and kids, that putted together all the stars of all the 9 seasons... this is our Expendables/Avengers  ) smashing some box office records, with the biggest OW of all-time for a portuguese movie (it sold 36.000 tickets on Thursday, theaters were adding shows and cancelling other movies, something I have never seen happening here!), and the 2nd biggest OW of the year. Bigger than The Dark Knight Rises, Avengers or Brave. Madagáscar 3 was the only movie it wasn't able to beat. People were writing this off as a flop some weeks ago. And now it became a monster. August alone saved box office here, but still showed that medium sized releases for teens/young adults are bound to flop (Step Up 4, That's My Boy, The Cabin in the Woods, Piranha 3DD). Seriously, fucking crazy month!

The Expendables 2 already passed the 1M€ here. Almost 200.000 admissions. The Expendables 2 sold 23.971 tickets this weekend, jumping over Bourne Legacy, which had a shitty hold. Not sure if it will last long enough to pass the first Expendables. That movie had incredible legs here.
