Can't wait for this week's numbers. Abraham Lincoln tanked in Portugal (but, so did MIB3 and John Carter...). I want to see the Russia/UK results.

That's actually not too terrible for Abe Lincoln, because most of the 17 markets were small. It's comparable to what it did domestic OW; not very good, but not the disaster that was expected. It should manage 60M or 70M OS but most it will comes months down the road, as the opening dates are very spread out and most aren't for weeks, if not months.

24 June, 2012 | By Jeremy Kay

DreamWorks Animation’s summer hit has reached an estimated $208.4m through PPI, while Huntsman brought in a further $22.6m for UPI and Disney reported a $13.5m haul from Brave’s initial forays. Sony’s MIB 3 has crossed $400m.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted added $30.1m from 11,250 cinemas in 44 countries. Mexico led the holdovers on $3.5m to stay top and propel the running total to $20.4m. A further $3.3m from 773 cinemas in France boosted the tally to $18.5m while $2.9m from 1,284 in Russia despite the number one launch of Brave resulted in $42.3m.

Brazil generated $3m from 470 as the film held on to its number one berth and reached $22.9m. Argentina was the same story as $1.8m raised the tally to a dazzling $11m, while South Korea produced $1.6m for $8.6m.

Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator added $4.4m in its sixth weekend from 2,186 venues in 37 countries for $83.2m. It opened in France on $1.9m from 334 cinemas and added $450,000 from 330 sites in the second weekend in Italy for $1.8m.

[*]Snow White And The Huntsman grossed $22.6m through Universal Pictures International from 6,780 sites in 60 territories to boost the running total to $160.4m. The fantasy adventure opened top in Australia on $6.1m from 245, an outstanding result that relegated new arrival Brave to second place.

New Zealand also returned a number one launch on $640,000 from 68 and Chile produced a number two debut on $304,000 from 46.

Japanese audiences have responded to the film and rewarded it with a number one hold in the second weekend as $2.3m from 334 resulted in $10.6m. French crowds like it too and $2m from 579 boosted the tally after two weekends to $7.4m. Russia has generated $10.1m after two weekends and the UK $20.7m after four.

The Five-Year Engagement was in a three-way race for UK dominance with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and MIB 3 over a slow session where most minds were on England’s exploits in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals. Nevertheless the comedy managed $1.8m from 452 and whatever happens it appears that Prometheus will be forced off its box office perch for the first time in four weeks.

Battleship stands at $236.4m, American Pie: Reunion $175.2m and Moonrise Kingdom $2.4m from the UK. Universal holds rights for the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America.

[*]Brave grossed $13.5m from an initial 10 territories through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International to combine with the $66.7m North American number one debut for $80.2m worldwide.

Russia led the way on $5.6m and 42% market share, followed by Australia on $3.6m and 27% share and China on $2.2m and 17% share.

Turning to Marvel Studios’ The Avengers, that behemoth added $2.3m from 56 territories to reach a staggering $837.9m and $1.426bn worldwide combined with the $598.3m North American tally.

The Avengers ranks as the third biggest release of all time in North America and worldwide behind Avatar and Titanic and the fourth biggest release internationally behind James Cameron’s aforementioned duo and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

[*]MIB 3 brought in a further $10.5m through Sony Pictures Releasing International from 7,660 screens in 75 markets to consolidate its $400m club membership and reach $414m.

In the fifth weekend the UK led the way on $1.6m from 776 for $30.7m but Japan remains the lead market and added $1.1m from 600 for $35.4m. South Korea has generated $23.8m, Germany $22.8m, France $17.2m, Australia $16.7m and Brazil $16.6m.

Adam Sandler comedy That’s My Boy grossed $900,000 from 245 in seven as the tally after two weekends climbed to $2.8m.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opened day-and-date with North America in 17 markets and grossed $8.1m from 2,656. Given that Timur Bekmambetov directed the action-heavy romp it was little surprise that Russia was the top market on $3.9m from 1,482 in second place. The UK produced $1.7m from 679 for a possible number one and was locked in a race with Sony’s MIB 3 and UPI’s The Five-Year Engagement.

Ice Age 4 red hot on $78m as Spider-Man spins $50m

1 July, 2012 | By Jeremy Kay

Fox International’s animation juggernaut shows no sign of slowing up as the latest episode inspired a mighty launch despite opening on a smaller initial footprint than its predecessor. Sony’s Spidey reboot also debuted strongly in a relatively limited first wave.

Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age: Continental Drift amassed $78.1m from 9,505 screens in 34 territories, arriving top of the table in each and posting a number one launch in the UK from previews ahead of the Jul 13 debut there. Roughly 4,200 screens were 3D.

This equates to roughly half the screen and market count of the day-and-date release of Ice Age 3 in July 2009. That behemoth went on to gross $694m internationally.

Fox International registered its biggest opening weekends in Mexico on $13.8m from 2,516 for 72% market share – the result also ranked as the third biggest industry debut – and Brazil on $6.9m from 1,010. France generated $11.8m from 1,072 to usurp The Avengers in the biggest launch of the year-to-date.

The film delivered $6.4m from 580 in Australia and set the industry’s biggest opening weekend in history in Argentina as $4.1m from 284 claimed 61% market share. Continental Drift ran riot in Latin America and in other all-time industry marks it grossed $3.2m from 296 in Colombia, $3.1m from 252 in Peru, $2.1m from 252 in Central America and $2m from 135 in Chile.

In a slew of all-time industry animated records the film scored $2.5m from 250 in Norway, $2m from 201 in Sweden for 54% market share, $830,104 from 89 in Ecuador and $346,038 from 23 in Bolivia.

Elsewhere Continental Drift opened in Spain on $4.1m from 829 and 45% market share despite the distraction of the national team’s participation in Sunday’s (Jul 1) Euro 2012 final against Italy, $1.4m from 407 in Turkey and $1.3m from 72 in the UAE.

The film is set to arrive in 14 further markets this week including Germany and Holland, followed by an additional wave of 16 markets day-and-date with North America including the UK and Russia. South Korea and India follow on Jul 26 and Jul 27 and Italy is set for Sept 28.

Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier directed Ice Age: Continental Drift from a screenplay by Michael Berg and Jason Fuchs. Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo lead the voice cast.

Fox International’s Prometheus added $6.2m from 4,592 screens in 58 markets as the running total climbed to $166.5m with Germany, Japan, Spain and Italy awaiting release. The UK has generated $36.1m after five weekends, Russia $22.1m after five, Australia $16.8m after four and France $16.5m after five.

[*]Sony Pictures Releasing International reported that Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man grossed approximately $50.2m from 13 markets in the first wave of webbed wonder as the Jul 3 North American launch approaches.

The webslinger – now played by British rising star Andrew Garfield opposite Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy – largely avoided Europe while the Euro 2012 continues to play out. He fared best in South Korea and grossed $13.4m from 1,213 screens for 71% market share and the third biggest launch for a Hollywood film in the Thursday-Sunday time frame on KRW15.8bn. The result came in 24% higher than the Spider-Man 3 debut over the same period.

The Amazing Spider-Man arrived in Japan on $11.4m from 1,092 for 84% of weekend box office and opened on a terrific $6m from 1,236 for the biggest ever debut of a Hollywood title in India, where it exceeded the Spider-Man 3 debut by 74%, The Avengers by 73% and doubled the lifetime gross of The Dark Knight.

The Philippines produced $3.2m from 529 for the fourth biggest Friday-Sunday debut in history. Taiwan generated $2.9m from 268, Hong Kong $2.7m from 158 for the fourth biggest Friday-Sunday session ever, Singapore $2.5m from 128 for the third biggest Friday-Sunday launch, Thailand $1.9m from 320 and Vietnam $425,000 from 41.

Brazil is a big family market, nonetheless PPI will be thrilled with the $26.3m running total. Argentina stands at an excellent $13.5m.

After seven weeks in release The Dictator has reached $89m and France stands at $4m after two sessions. The comedy stayed top for the third consecutive weekend in Italy, where all eyes will be on the Euro 2012 final on Sunday night. The running total there is $2.3m.
