BoxOffice.com's Official 25 Most Overrated Movies Post-2000: RESULTS

Recommended Posts

Who in the fudge actually rates Thor?

Exactly. Thor is nowhere near rated enough to be considered overrated.

Waiting for Man of Steel to show up here, and then a couple weeks later on the Most Underappreciated Films of the 2000s list as well.

Thor got 77% on RT. It's definitely "rated". Man of Steel is rotten, and nowhere near well-regarded enough to be called overrated, so that one I agree with.

Yet in my own poll on what Marvel movies you would give an 'A' too Thor managed only 2 votes, even the incredible hulk and iron man 2 did more! On RT Thor may have 77% fresh rating but it only has a 6.7 average rating. Couple that with an imdb rating of a 7 tells me that most people found Thor an enjoyable way to pass 2 hours, but they hardly think of it as a great movie.

So if you super hated Thor and think that people find the movie 'average' are over-rating it then sure it deserves a spot on your list. But I just don't see this swarm of people thinking its super awesome.

Fun fact:  The only Best Picture nominee from last year that didn't receive any votes (the rest received two or more) was Django Unchained.

Also, y'all might be surprised at a couple of films that missed this list and some of the ones that made it (very high up actually).

Another fun fact, this next movie tends to have a trend of constantly beating the Social Network (including in this list), it received double the amount of votes yet only scored one more point over it.

Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war.

TomatoMeter - 94%

IMDb - 8.1

Metacritic - 88

Box Office - 138m Dom / 414m WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated

"A conventional over-hyped picture lifted by unconventional fairly-hyped performances. Truly the m - m - most British movie ever made." - Gareth Simms, Platform

"The King Speech ... is practically the definition of Oscar bait. It's a veritable trifle of sumptuous delights for members of the Academy to nosh on. The King's Speech is Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory to the voters' Augustus Gloop." - Simon Maraudo, Quickflix

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"Strong performances can only go so far in a film that has a boring, uninspired script that never takes any risks. Completely undeserved to win Best Picture, but that's become the norm with the Academy. " - Noctis

"REALLY overrated and boring, how did this win Best Picture? When I saw this in theaters, everyone was so old, probably reflects the voting board. " - Frozen Iceroll

Fun Fact"The King's speech, as delivered in the movie, is only two-thirds of the original. The original speech has 407 words; the movie version has 269. Four sentences were deleted and four sentences were shortened."

Iron Man 3

(80 points, 4 votes)

<ahttp://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjIzMzAzMjQyM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzM2NjcyOQ@@._V1_SX214_.jpg' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

TomatoMeter - 78%

IMDb - 7.4

Metacritic - 62

Box Office - 409m DOM / 1.215b WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated

"Iron Man 3 is an decent movie that really should have been far better with this pedigree." - Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

"Iron Man 3 feels like an exploitative mulching of present-day anxieties. The script is ambitious but not wise enough to be rightfully cathartic. It's more Cuisinart than art." - Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated

"Please, no more..." - The Stingray

"Man of Steel was one of the best I've seen this year whilst Iron Man 3 tried very hard to be but failed miserably." - ChD

Fun Fact - "The first assembly cut was 3 hours and 15 minutes long. The final cut was 1 hour and 59 minutes long."

I'll be honest, all of the votes were really spread out among movies, there was no one movie that a bunch of the voters voted on, so there was a lot of diversity in the picks.  Even the number one movie was left our of quite a few peoples lists.

Next up is a movie that people just can't stop comparing Iron Man 3 to (In fact, they can't stop comparing this movie to any film).

#17

The Dark Knight Rises

(81 points, 3 votes)

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

TomatoMeter - 88%

IMDb - 8.6

Metacritic - 78

Box Office - 448m Dom / 1.084b WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated -

"Over-written, over-plotted and with a ridiculous villain. Disappointing." - Boo Allen, Denton Record Chronicle

"Hollywood always bets on the audience's willingness to settle for less than they deserve." - Rubin Safaya, Cinemalogue.com

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated

"I don't understand the love for TDK trilogy or Nolan in General, he makes good movies but they tend to lack actual substance and depth and instead just provide a big epic scale and an illusion of depth." - The Panda

"If this film were truly good, it would not cause so much divide amongst its fanbase." - CloneWars

Fun Fact"The final fight marks the only occasion in either this series or the Burton/Schumacher films in which Batman is seen during the daytime."

And here is the last one for today

#16

The Artist

(89 points, 4 votes)

Outside a movie premiere, enthusiastic fan Peppy Miller literally bumps into the swashbuckling hero of the silent film, George Valentin. The star reacts graciously and Peppy plants a kiss on his cheek as they are surrounded by photographers. The headlines demand: "Who's That Girl?" and Peppy is inspired to audition for a dancing bit-part at the studio. However as Peppy slowly rises through the industry, the introduction of talking-pictures turns Valentin's world upside-down.

TomatoMeter - 98%

IMDb - 8.0

Metacritic - 89

Box Office - 44m Dom / 133m WW

Why Critics Find it Overrated

"The Academy Awards are the biggest annual party that Hollywood throws for itself, and The Artist is a movie that worships Hollywood. Looks like a done deal." - Jeffrey Overstreet, Filmwell

"If The Artist truly were from the period it's about, it would be a minor film that occasionally played on TCM at 3AM, and about which even hardcore silent film fans wouldn't care much." - Devin Faraci, Badass Digest

Why Box Office Analysts Find It Overrated

"Do the Weinsteins have naked photos of every member of the academy while sucking each other off, while in a Nazi pose while strangling a dog? They must. That's the only way you can explain every film they purchase being mentioned for Oscars. The Artist is a horrible film about a time in film that has been extinct for 80 years. There is nothing appealing about this film. The acting is a joke and the fact that it is going to be up for best original screenplay solidifies my point. " - baumer

"Extremely overrated and disappointing film. Only great things about this film is the set pieces, the dog, music, and acting was good but not oscar worthy. The the story was so dry. The humor was not funny, never laughed during the filming." - Dexter/Jesus of Suburbia

Fun Fact - "There is not a single 'zoom shot' in the entire movie because Zoom technology did not exist in the movie's time period."

Also, voted number 4 for most overrated of 2013 (Not post 2000) is

The Wolf of Wall Street

Artist isn't just overrated, its a piece of shit that leaves you feel cheated.  Last time I checked, filmmaking as an art form has evolved for the better for many obvious reasons, and giving a movie Best Picture just for being a reminder of what filmmaking once was in its infancy simply because of big technological limitations is a flat out contradiction and insulting.  Its remarkable how much blatant cynicism flows through Hollywood sometimes.  Oh well, for everyone else, the joke is on them.

Why Critics Think It's Overrated

"This is not a good movie, but a mediocre means of passing a few hours. It is a classic example of money and special effects diluting artistic vision and talent." - Steven Snyder, Zertinet Movies

"It's the kind of movie for which words of tepid praise are invented." - Nick Davis, Nick's Flick Picks

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated

""Aunt Mae, Aunt Mae, is that an angel?"

Not the worst of the series, but easily one of the top 5 most overrated of the genre. " - Squaremaster316

"never been a fan of camp unless it's completely over the top, so the atmosphere of this is a bit off. villain wasn't as enjoyable as spider-man 2. still enjoyable enough." - lisa

Fun Fact - "The scene in which Peter Parker catches Mary Jane's lunch on the tray involved no CGI. With the help of a sticky substance to keep the tray planted on his hand, Tobey Maguire eventually (after many takes) performed the stunt exactly as seen."
