Is IT getting some showtimes until the opening of the second part? Or why is that?

There was a limited rerelease yesterday, with an 8 minute long preview of the second chapter.

It shows how big of a phenomenon the first chapter was (14.4M, 5th gross of the season, just 4% lower than Star Wars 8 and 22% lower than Infinity War). Stuff like this is kind of unprecedented, and would make more sense for a big Marvel movie.

It 2 is actually the second biggest concern for The Lion King after the good weather. Usually when a second phenomenon is released, the first one freefalls. Hopefully weather will be rainy by that time.

Saw The Lion King (spectacular, but without the depth the original had), and the theater was very busy.

Minions opened with a bit more than 2M euros (on a Thursday) and ended up at 23+. Considering that movies usually drop in the 20's on a summer Thursday, this means The Lion King has to open around 3M on Wednesday to have a chance at beating Endgame.

Anyways, Moviement has released the total grosses of the last 3/4 months, and this is how they look like:

SUMMER 2019 VS 2018
August*: € 8.605.143 - € 8.422.061
July: € 27.277.992 - € 13.168.659
June: € 25.259.057 - € 22.413.132
May: € 48.176.269 - € 34.346.120

* first two weeks

So May and July were the clear standouts. May was boosted by Endgame and Aladdin, and even more by the terrible weather. July had Spider Man, which alone represents 70% of the gap. June was crazy hot and all blockbuster bombed, so the gain was minimal. August is so far actually down from 2018 (when taking into account the 3rd week of the month) but starting from today things should change.

the lion king disney GIF

€ 2.943.307

432.892 admissions

5th best OD ever, and 4th for a Hollywood release (behind Endgame, HP7/2 and Infinity War, trailing HP and IW by less than 5%).

All time #1 non-Cameron Hollywood movie is play. Endgame is shaking.

I am actually surprised by people being surprise by how good TLK is doing.

It has massively underperformed in USA and China by atleast $200mn each.

If it had reached my (our) pre-release expectations for the domestic market and China, my club would have succeeded....

Sub-20% drop on its first Thursday, a better hold than Aladdin. The number is 24% above Minions' OD (fell on a Thursday). Using that movie's legs, The Lion King is getting the non-Cameron all time record. Endgame is now really shitting its pants.

At this point the movie may get a 5-day opening above 2M admissions. Insane.

This is not a surprise

Well, Italy has produced just 2 30M+ dollar Hollywood movies in the last 8 years. One was a crazy phenomenon that kept getting multiple views (Bohemian Rhapsody) and the other was the most anticipated movie of all time opening at the beginning of a 10-day holiday and of one of the rainiest months ever (Endgame). The Lion King is The Lion King, but 30M euros are still 30M euros.

Also, these numbers suggest that 5M admissions are possibile, while even the mighty Endgame stopped a bit over 4.

Minions' pattern

Thursday > 1.976.456

Friday > 1.569.013 (-21%)

Saturday > 1.718.787 (+10%)

Sunday > 1.707.862 (-0%)

Wednesday > 1.218.848 (+21%)

Thursday > 772.341 (-37%)

Friday > 902,065 (+17%)

Saturday > 1.629.662 (+81%) rain rain rain

Sunday > 1.356.218 (-17%)

2nd weekend > 4.843.498 (-32%) // Total: 15.489.855)

Monday > 482.720 (-64%) some schools started

Tuesday > 572.385 (+18%)

Thursday > 364.524 (-38%)

Friday > 428.186 (+18%)

Saturday > 658.555 (+54%)

Sunday > 1.150.000 (rough number, can’t find the actual – lots of rain)

3rd weekend > 2.668.177 (-45%) // Total: 19.760.468
4th weekend > 1.010.222 (-62%) Inside Out opened // 21.313.070

7th weekend > 203.981 (-58%) HT2 opened // Total: 23.127.341

Total: 23.450.000

The Lion King should have no trouble keeping a 20%+ gain over the yellow bananas until the weekend. It needs some bad weather though to keep that pace the week after and make it reach the all time non-Cameron title.

The funny thing is that the #1 non-Cameron movie currently is...The Lion King (32.9M euros)!

[Sometimes I mentioned Alice in Wonderland as #1 (30.4M), but that's just on the official "lazy" charts, that use the incomplete numbers released by Cinetel (which now covers 19/20 of the theaters, but 25 years ago just half of them).]

30. THE LORD OF THE RING - THE RETURN OF THE KING € 25,550,000

The estimes (Endgame, Inside Out, SW7) are based on how much their respective genre usually gain once all the theaters are counted (2% at best for big blockbusters with huge fanbase, 5%+ for animated movies not aiming too much at kids).

The most impressive non-Cameron results are Lion King, Jurassic Park and Aladdin, still in the top 30 despite being from the last century. Harry Potter 1 was totally crazy too.

the lion king simba GIF by Walt Disney Studios

€ 2.618.593

386.245 admissions

An increase. Yes, an increase. The movie managed to rise 5% on a summer Friday after a record-breaking couple of days. The lead on Minions went from 24% to over 60%. And all of this with 30°C+ across the country. The cume is already above 8M.

Also, the OD number was revised up, from 2.95 to 3.09. The Lion King now holds the 3rd best OD ever for a Hollywood release after Endgame and HP7/2.
