TimeOut's Top 100 Animated Movies of All-Time (Voted on by Animation Experts/Directors)

Recommended Posts

I always find "greatest" lists made by those in the industry to be interesting, and this is no different. There's also a breakdown on the site, so if you've ever wanted to know what Wes Anderson's top 10 animated movies of all time are, go check that out.

Surprisingly good list. Sure I disagree with some of the ordering and a few choices strike me as odd, but that's true of most lists and this one has a much better selection than the usual Pixar/Disneythons animated lists on here are.

The overall selection is pretty good. The order is pretty iffy.

I question anything that rates Fantastic Mr. Fox so high. It's a cute little film, but hardly that brilliant.

The order is pretty terrible and the overall selection is only passable imo. Shrek, Shrek 2, Hercules, Mulan and The Prince of Egypt don't even make the top 100? That's just ridiculous especially when films like Kung Fu Panda and the 70s LOTR made the cut...

Hercules most definitely doesn't deserve to be on there. That film is a mess. And I'd personally argue against the inclusion of Shrek. The rest? Eh, there are always going to be a few I'd like on missing.

And I'm perfectly fine with KFP making the list. It was a great film. I'll admit I can't really judge the 70's LOTR, since I've not seen it, but anything with John Hurt can't be too bad.

Wow, that's a really great list. Infinitely better than the ever-so-small-minded lists that pop up from groups of people on this board who all pat each other on the back for loving the exact same movies.

It certainly doesn't match up with my list, but obviously it's not supposed to match up with anybody's list, duh.

Alice? Alice? Who or what the fuck is Alice 1988 that is apparently the 12th greatest animation of all time?

The internet is a useful invention.

I probably wouldn't put Fantastic Mr. Fox in my top 10, but I'm not against it being so high. It's definitely in the running for my favorite animated film of 2009.

The order is bound to be a bit odd since it's compiled from a bunch of lists. Honestly, this is one of the best lists of this type I have seen, if not the best. There are quite a few films that I haven't even heard of (which is rare--I usually know all of the films when I come across one of these lists), and it's nice to see the inclusion of some significant films that barely ever get mentioned on one of these lists. Fehérlófia, Night on the Galactic Railroad, The King and the Mockingbird, When the Wind Blows, Mind Game, and Kirikou and the Sorceress for example. And most of these are far from obscure.

I agree it is much better than the usual lists, which are 95% Disney, Pixar and Ghibli. (And I say that as a big fan of those three studios.)

I do like that Sita Sings the Blues is on the list. Really great little film, there.

I'm surprised The Thief and the Cobbler didn't make the list.

It's not too surprising considering Richard Wiliiam's original vision never came to be and the product that actually got released was a mess. Though I suppose the Recobbled Cut is famous enough that it could have made it on there.

Shrek is definitely a surprising exclusion, but the exclusion of Hercules and Mulan don't bother me at all. I'm a fan of them, but they have definite issues that keep them from being top films. The Prince of Egypt was a great film and outdid most, if not all, of the post-Lion King 90s Disney films, so I agree that it is probably worthy of this list.

I think KFP is a worthy entry. It has a good story, and some superb visuals and design.

Some films that I think would have been worthy of this list:

Shrek

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Lilo & Stitch

Wolf Children (or something by Mamoru Hosoda)

Maybe something else by Don Bluth, such as The Land Before Time

Angel's EggA Boy Named Charlie Brown

Royal Space Force

Jin-Roh

Mr. Bug Goes to Town

Plague Dogs

The Snow Queen (1957)

And some others I'm sure I'm forgetting....
