Why do I get the feeling in that last bracket we could be heading to the Avengers/Dark Knight  Elite Eight matchup

 

I just split them up so they'd be easier to read. The highest-seeded matchup will face the lowest-seeded in the next round (ie Gone with the Wind/Sixth Sense will face Shrek 2/Ghostbusters).

I'm willing to bet half the people voting against Cleopatra haven't seen it.

 

It gets a ton of flak for how over-the-top expensive it was, but it's actually a solid movie, if having the old-time epic melodrama.

But it faces Mary Poppins which is, IMHO, one of the best children movies ever, so it is understandable Cleopatra can lose the confrontation.

There is something to be said for reputation. This bracket isn't necessarily which one is "better", it could also be which one you'd prefer to watch, given the choice.

 

Of course, I respect anyone's decision to abstain.

Nostalgia is a factor that has influence in this type of choices. You can argue the same with Empire Strikes Back vs Finding Nemo confrontation. People who are 30 or 40 will probably choose ESB and people who are 15 or 20 will probably prefer Finding Nemo for the same reason. At the end, this is a subjective choice. Said this, I prefer Mary Poppins over Cleopatra. I do not like too much peplum movies.

 

I agree with the second part of your post. It makes no sense to choice between two things if you do not know one/both of them.
