There's quite a few examples of the rags to riches stories (A lot of them never really emphasize the importance of the mere fact of getting lucky and assistance from others), but I don't respect everyone who has it.

There are plenty of people in the Hollywood business who started off fairly small and got large, but when you get big for creating bad content that's not only poor quality but hinders progress in getting past social stereotypes I can't give much respect.

His Madae films are not poor quality at all.  Only someone who doesn't have that kind of comedic understanding would make a comment like that.  And I don't mean it in a "I get it so I'm better than you" kind of way.  But comedy is subjective and the way Madea is is the way a lot of us "older" posters were brought up.  Black, white, brown skin, doesn't matter.  Madea films are funny because those of us who like them can relate to them, even though they are clearly over the top.

That would be amazing.

Other pornstars turned actresses include She from Game of Thrones.

Only if Sasha Grey was picked for Fifty Shades.  She would have automatically won the Oscar for Best Actress hands down.

Hollywood is a mix of commerce and art. If your work ends up firmly on the "commerce" side of the equation, I don't really have a huge issue with that, especially if you're able to retain your individual expression in an industry which aggressively seeks to eradicate that sort of thing. There's no requirement that movies assist in changing social norms.

His movies aren't for me at all -- I'm completely uninterested in them. But that doesn't change his success, who he may be as a person, and his on-screen presence as an actor.

I've never really followed Perry's personal life, so why do people dislike him so much?  I know of one good deed he did where a woman with cerebral palsy had her very expensive wheel chair stolen by some punks.  He heard about it and bought her a new one.  I know it's just one story, but he seems pretty cool to me.

I'm fairly certain that Tyler Perry and Adam Sandler will one day fuck up and accidentally produce 3 classic comedies in a row.

Funny, I'd say Sandler has already done that.

Adam Sandler is about to produce them for Netflix. Just watch it happen.

People mainly hate him for his movies, enforcing stereotypes, shoving religion down people's throats, and not listening to critics. Or at least that's what I've been told. He seems like a nice guy, and I've heard he's good in Gone Girl, but I won't know until 20 minutes or so when I'm at the cinema. But frankly, I'm not a guy who focuses on ranting or complaining about stuff. I'd rather promote what I love than showcase what I hate. But hey, what do I know?

A lot of people feel as if his movies are built around negative black stereotypes and find his work fairly insulting. In some cases I agree. It's like watching 90 minutes of the worst BET has to offer.

So people are mad at him because he portrays black people in a certain way?  And it's in a comedic sense?

That's pretty fucking stupid.

It's comedy.  Comedy is based on truth, at least some of it.

I dont think people really dislike him personally. Just the majority of his movies enforce stereotypes about black people. That all of them are religious, country/southern, involved in some type of crime, etc. He has a very narrow, niche audience and i dont think he's a versatile filmmaker. However, he's been so successful and i applaud that. But as a black person who isnt religious or southern, I want more films that tell different stories about black people. Whether its' romance, sci-fi, action. I'd be happier if/when more upcoming black filmmakers like Ava Duvernay, Ryan Coogler get their shine. Gina Prince-Bythewood (love & basketball, secret life of bees) is also another black filmaker that deserves more shine, she has Beyond the Lights coming out in November, which has been getting great reviews.
