Yes, this is totally going to make less than The Artist (a black and white movie) and Birdman (a film too weird and Inside Hollywood-ish to breakout), among recent Best Picture winners. Delusion is real.

It might beat them, but that doesn't mean it's getting past $100m dom.

Unless La La Land wins BP, you couldn't possibly compare it to Birdman and The Artist. Those two movies made a LOT money after they won awards. Plus, La La Land is just as "Inside Hollywood-ish" as Birdman.

This is a much more appealing-looking film to audiences than something strange like Birdman, though. Also, this is the Best Picture frontrunner, more or less. With it being confirmed that Silence is gonna be dropping very, very late (guilds like SAG might not even get to see it in time for voting) and almost certain to make less than this at the box office, it's clear there is close to nothing stopping this train at this point.

Is it? Birdman was a comedy, this is a musical. Which genre is dead and which one is not?

Birdman was a rather spiteful independent movie with famous faces. La La Land is, by all accounts, a total crowd pleaser (and not based on something from Broadway, so it won't turn off those who are averse to "randomly break out into song" kinds of musicals).

The movies I'm actually reminded of most are Juno and Black Swan. Those were awards players that also connected with a rather young audience, and La La Land has all of the ingredients to tap into the same kind of zeitgeist.

There's been a hit musical every few years since Chicago. Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Les Mis, Into the Woods. Sure they're all brand names but the genre isn't in any way dead. And those are just live action musicals. People aren't rejecting movie characters breaking into song and dance numbers anymore.

Also Birdman made 2/3 of its money before the nominations were even announced.

Not being based on a Broadway musical could actually work heavily in this movie's favor, I'm thinking. If next year's The Greatest Showman on Earth (the Barnum biopic with Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, and Zac Efron) is also a hit I could see that leading to studios greenlighting more original musical projects.

It's undeniably alive, and every movie in the genre that seriously connects with the audience thrives.

Of 17 live-action musicals that have received a wide release in the past 10 years (starting from Dreamgirls), six comfortably crossed $100m and nine got over $85m. That's not a bad track record at all.

This movie has a lot more GA appeal than Birdman ever did. To claim they're both the same level of inside-hollywood is just untrue. Birdman was a lot weirder and a lot less... for lack of better word - fun.

This movie has a huge appeal, just wait and see. It will find its audience. People will fall in love with this movie.
