Bigger drop than DOS.

You compare the wrong datas.

Look  up the release dates, when which holiday was... and when the way less results earning full school ... January week is placed within the charts.

DOS was January 2 at that Thursday, Hobbit 3 is the 8 January result

It has a ton of buzz and some really great marketing, so I can certainly see a 40 mill weekend coming, but this is not going to get WOM like the second, much less the first, at all. Taken 2 might have gotten bad reviews, but it had ENERGY, was fun in a ludicrous way, and had cool action scenes. This movie has barely any action and a bland, lifeless storyline. Not gonna be a WOM hit, IMO.

Plus Taken 2 failed to outgross it's predecessor despite a much bigger opening weekend.

  Birdman $80,023 -6% 282 -10 $284 $25,747,726

Gone Girl $35,788 -2% 279 10 $128 $166,872,192

So neither Mojo or Boxoffice.com has changed their MJ numbers from yesterday. Will we ever know who was right?

The-Numbers gave the same as BO.com, so for the moment I asume their number

By comparison, Taken 2 earned $1.5 million from preview shows, as part of a $49.5 million weekend, back in October 2012. Taken 3's initial haul is also in line with last September's The Equalizer ($1.5 million Thursday night / $34.1 million weekend). Based on early results and strong online tracking, Taken 3 looks poised to top $30 million through Sunday.

If it's a similar preview number shouldn't it translate to a similar OW? I don't know about the buzz of Taken 3 but it seems to me the franchise and Liam have a nice solid fan base.

1.6 million is great, and I'm not thinking Taken 3 will blow past my 31M prediction. But could the finale factor have inflated Thursday grosses?

not necessarily what possibly drove it was that Taken is a known action movie franchise and Liam Neeson is a more known name in that genre
