2012 Best Picture Thread

Recommended Posts

I doubt The Master gets anything outside of Best Actor. It's practically a box office bomb, and its very polarizing.

Master's biggest shot at a nomination is Best Supporting Actor. But, I'll say that Hoffman is in danger of falling off come Oscar morning as the ensemble, and Adams both failed to make SAG. That indicates that there isn't too much broad support for the movie which could be problematic.

Bitch please. Dark Knight Rises would take Marigold Hotel's spot. You usually have the mega-blockbuster spot with the Best Picture nominees. In 2010 we had Inception and in 2009 we had Avatar.Plus, if Inception can grasp a BP nod, I don't see why TDKR can't.

There are a number of things that a woefully misguided. Times have changed. Back in 2010, mega-blockbusters got nominations much easier. Back then, they had 10 nominees with a carrying ranked system for nominees. Now, they use a variable nominee system with a carrying ranked system that puts a large emphasis on #1 votes. The current system rewards films that have lots of #1 votes and simultaneously decreases the importance of 3,4,5th place votes. The fact is, as I reiterate probably for the millionth time now over the past few months, TDKR will not get enough #1 votes, and won't have enough #2 votes carried over to be able to get that nomination. Secondly, Avatar made 2.8 billion dollars WW. It was too big to ignore. Inception was in serious contention for a BD nomination, and Nolan was arguably snubbed. That indicated broad based Academy support for the movie, which obviously was a more academy friendly movie than TDKR. TDKR is a fucking comic book movie. The Academy will never, ever respect a comic book movie the way they do a crime drama, or a bio-pic, or a million other genres.

I do think Joaquin Phoenix should get in pretty easily

WTF? If he gets in, he'll barely scrape in. He missed SAG. The film is not well received by the Academy. It's buzz is comparatively very low. There's no way he'll get in pretty easily.

What? No SAG?! But isn't it the best performance of the year?

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not.... But Master only got one SAG nomination, PSH.

Well shit. I've only heard great praise for Phoenix, and even people who didn't like the movie that much say he was good in it. I guess he getting snubbed is kinda like Brad Pitt getting snubbed for The Tree of Life, another divisive movie

Boring and Safe. Love that Skyfall made it. Love that Moonrise Made it. Both in my top 10 of the year, and were films I didn't think would make it. Disgusted that Beasts made it though. Dreadful picture. Just Dreadful.     And shame Master didn't make it. It's no longer a top 10 or a perfect 10/10 film for me after a few rewatches, but I was hoping they'd go for something more out there for them. Edited by riczhang

Last year 3 films that were more broad based consensus titles: Bridesmaids, TGWTT, The Ides of March lost out to 2 very passion based films ToL and ELAIC. I'm thinking that if we end up with 9 or 10 nominees for BP that we'll probably see at least 2 differences between PGA and AMPAS. Skyfall's most in danger of falling off, not sure what some of the others would be. Probably be Moonrise, or Beasts; but both of those strike me as passion based votes (You either have it at #1 or 2 or not at all) but they made it in the more consensus based PGA nomination system.

I said this earlier (not sure if it was this thread) but Lincoln doesn't seem like the kind of film that gets a huge number of #1 citations. It has barely won anything yet despite being nominated everywhere. It'll lead in nominations, but I don't quite think it's the favorite for Best Picture.1. Zero Dark Thirty2. Argo3. Lincoln4. Les MiserablesThose are the four with a shot to win5. Silver Linings Playbook6. Django Unchained7. Life of PiThose three are likely nominees. The last couple spots will come down to two out of five of Skyfall, The Master, Marigold, Moonrise, and The Impossible. Beasts and TDKR seem out.

I wonder if Skyfall could get a nod..... That'd be great, and it'd be a huge ratings boost as well. But, I'm leaning more and more towards a bare minimum of 5 or 6 nominees. ZDT, Argo, Lincoln, Les Mis, SLP, and either Django of LoP. I think that the year is so strong that the 5% rule may actually work against many movies because everyone will collect around the 5 big movies of the year instead of a situation like last year where you had a few very strong movies but the rest were pretty evenly matched and so we ended up with a lot of nominees.

Expected list. The Master appears to be dead for good.

Not necessarily. A Serious Man, Winter's Bone, and The Tree of Life all missed a PGA nomination. I'll agree that it's a longshot, but it's not dead yet. (And yes, I imagined that in the voice of the not-quite-dead peasant in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.)

Super happy Skyfall made it. PGA snubbing DH2 was unforgivable because Producers should have acknowledged the biggest franchise in the world.DU is happening as the Best Picture nominee. WOM is insane already but actual nom will help its legs too.

I feel like The Master's reception is just like The Tree of Life, it's a passion film so it could sneak in. Anyway, with the PGA nominees Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild both got a boost. Can they both sneak in? I'm predicting just one and maybe Moonrise Kingdom.Skyfall is getting some heat as well so maybe that's the one who would get the "blockbuster" spot and it's fairly new compared to TDKR and TA.
