I don't think this is a surprise at all.  The marketing for this started last year and it has been strong ever since.

Well I'm surprised. But I haven't been following box office as much as I used to.

So I've probably been well out of the loop.

Pets could have a muted weekend because strong weekdays right?

Like the 2nd weekend of Dory

Yes. I think IO(+58%) and Minions(+53.6%) like Friday bumps may not happen.

I don't think Fri bump will be as low as Dory's 33% because Dory's weekedays kicked off from an amazing 43% Monday drop while Pets Monday drop was a normal 59%. So % wise Dory was much stronger in weekdays. After that great Monday Dory did not show correction on Tue,Wed,Thu and so Friday's low bump makes sense.

Predicting mid-40s bump for Pets for 14.75-15.25m Friday.

This Pets movie- Where did it come from? What a nice summer surprise.

Not a surprise if you paid attention to animations. It had all the makings of a hit since the first footage came out.

It's good to be surprised sometimes.

That's another issue for me. Not really a fan of animations. But I do pay attention to the hype. Finding Dory has been hyped up so the numbers were not a surprise. But props to the members that got the Pets box office predictions right. Good job.

dory needs an immediate recovery!!! we need 1st $500m animation!

Are you the one plastering this under all the BOM Facebook statuses? At least you didn't call FD's run "disastrous" here lol.

FD run is already amazing, but it needs more, see how much mermaid made in China? it made $500m+ in China. The US should have a $500m run too, US is the biggest market in the world after all

For me I actually felt the marketing and hype and recognition was bigger for the Pets campaign than Dory.  It really felt huge but the idea of a non-Disney/Pixar original animation going over 300 didn't really set in.  I thought Lego Movie felt huge also but it didn't go much above 250.  I think around Zootopias final total is where it's heading unless Ice Age has somewhat of an effect.

A lot of its final gross will depend on its next 2 weekends and weekday holds.  It's behind Minions at this point but started making up ground yesterday.  Minions holds were very bad but, it did start having pretty strong holds after the first 3 weekends and first 2 weekdays.  It will fall behind IO daily tracking every day for the rest of its run on Monday and on some days by 1-1.5 million per day.   I think somewhere in between Minions and IO final total.

Its fun when you expect a really good run and even those high expectations get exceeded.
