Is there an untapped demand for adult blockbusters/dramas?

Recommended Posts

Obviously I wish something like Manchester or (cough cough) La La Land could still have a run like say, Tootsie or Terms of Endearment, but I think the examples you've cited just over the last four years show that there is still plenty of room for a successful adult drama given the proper circumstances. What's sad is the fact that something like Steve Jobs craps out at $17m because Michael Fassbender isn't a star, or that something like Billy Lynn has one of the worst domestic box office runs in years (sub-$2m) because it doesn't get Oscar-worthy reviews.

The fact that a drama for adults has to have 1) a sci-fi/action premise, 2) significant Oscar buzz or 3) a recognizable movie star in order to be a success is kinda disheartening.

or idk maybe I'm just ranting idk

Having a hard on for misery porn is considered being adult I guess.

The 1% go see Manchester By The Sea & Moonlight to feel good about themselves.

The 99% go see Civil War & Jurassic World & Deadpool & Life OF Pets.

The 99% know misery all too well.

They don't need a reminder about how shitty life can be.

Movie taste is class warfare 101.

Go to Cannes and You ll see how it works.

Did I hear a mic dropped ?

I think I did.

Hollywood is kinda stupid, though. (Collectively) Look at the ongoing and pervasive thought process that no one goes to see "urban"-oriented movies. It takes someone like a Tyler Perry to jump into a market that's clearly under-served.

With the occasional exception for comedies, the studios don't make these mid-budget movies because marketing costs are astronomical and adults are more selective than teens (who'll gobble up anything with a lot of VFX and sizzle). And the bean-counters who green-light projects hate relying on execution of material, because that's not something quantifiable.

So in calling Hollywood stupid you give them a really smart reason for not making more of these movies that doesn't actually prove me wrong?

More people want to see Dinosaurs than a drama about a gay black guy growing up? no shit Sherlock.

Most people would never know Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea exist until after the oscar season is over and they 're both ut of theatres. I think the conversation is about why Hollywood doesn't give to most of these movies enough support to reach the mainstream not if Moonlight was gonna be a huge blockbuster if it was released at 4000 theatres with blockbuster level marketing.

To give an example Manchester by the Sea can get to 50-60m dom win best actor and screenplay at the oscars have every single person who saw it raving about it on social media and it will still get an initial limited release with minimal advertising in my country because "we have to see if it can perform" according to industry thinking. On the other hand Underword:who the f@ck cares anymore got a wide release with a full ad campaign this week, bombed epically but it doesn't matter because it was less of a risk or something.

Well, you see:

Tele wants more adult dramas. Therefore, adult dramas should have a financially viable market.
