Cars 3 was a bust. It will be interesting to see if Disney makes another one.

Wonder Woman is continuing to kick ass then take names. It doesn't "have" to but I would love it if it made it to 413mil.

To be fair, Disney probably doesn't give much of a shit if Cars 3 falls below 400M WW (which is not a full certainty, due to Italy and Germany's releases approaching later this month). Most of the money made from the Cars franchise comes from merchandising, and I think they expanded this weekend just to finally get it over 150M DOM.

That being said, fuck them if they greenlight Cars 4. They have zero reason to. Merchandising money can still be made if they simply resign the franchise to a TV cartoon on Disney Channel/Disney Junior for kids. That's the perfect place for it. Nobody really cares about these movies, and Cars 3 will barely double its production budget. It's not a Good Dinosaur proportion bomb, but it's still closer to a money loser than Pixar would ever like any of their movies to be.

Wonder Woman had a smaller last week drop than these movies:

The Hitman's Bodyguard
Annabelle: Creation
Leap!
Logan Lucky
Dunkirk
Girls Trip
The Emoji Movie
The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature
The Dark Tower

Yep, a cheapie straight to DVD/Blu-Ray release will help sell the merchandise. No need to put hundreds of millions of dollars into a Cars 4.

The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 really do show that Pixar are not Invincible like they were before.

I'm guessing if EMOJI had better reception, it could have made a play at 100M+ ala Angry Birds.

AB did 2.81x (107.5/38.2) though. At 151 dom CARS3 will be 2.81x. Only better than SHREK3 (2.65x) for animations that did 100+. CARS2 and MINIONS are ~2.9x.

Emoji was a novel concept (irrespective of execution) but AB's awareness and brand recognition was too big compared to Emoji's (emoji was not really a brand too). Released at the right time (2 years before the actual release) AB could have hit 50 ow.

Pretty sure the main reason Cars 3 was made so the badly reviewed Cars 2 wouldn't be the last on in that franchise

now that Lassiter can rest easy on that, he will likely be ok with continuing the franchise with a Tv show or something

I think at some point we will learn how much Cars3 fetched Disney in merchandising.

Going to take a guess it isn't as much this time around. A lot of Cars merchandise was on clearance at both Target and Toys R Us last week.

~333.5 will give HOMECOMING 2.85x multiplier. It's gonna happen isn't it?

Should be around 324.5 cume after the 4-day weekend (~4.1m). 9m away from 2.85x.

Thinking 330m. Summer is over and movies people want to see are actually opening next week

I think not only Cars 2 hurt Cars 3 but Planes and Planes 2 as well. Some People may not have seen them but they knew of their existence and were sick of the talking vehicle shtick. Disneytoon will likely take over the Cars universe now but Space will likely do Smurfs numbers ($12M/$45M).

Cars 3 Blu-ray will be Released November 7

VERY early for a Pixar June film, both Inside Out and Dory weren't released until December.

If my memory is correct I think MU, Brave and C2 came out on DVD in November as well.
