Hatebox
That's a terribly put-together trailer. I quite like Cooper's previous work though, might check it out. Weird how it has a 3:10 To Yuma vibe given Bale and Foster's presence.
EmpireCity
Good acting, beautiful cinematography but a clunky script and takes itself way too seriously. Not a moment of fun or humor for the characters and dour from start to finish. They will never make their money back on this. 2
Avatree
I enjoyed this movie quite a lot. It's a nice quiet and very tense western. Strong performances from all, especially Christian Bale who gets a lot more out of the role than his dialogue has. The music and imagery is beautiful and haunting. But, the film is very slow. Like snails pace slow. And it never stops being serious, there's not an ounce of humour. Audience I saw it with was very bored. I cant see this going down well at all. I like it but it's just not a movie designed for a wide audience, and if you go by this it's not difficult to see why westerns have died out. AndyK
^I don't remember the revenant being humourous. It doesn't have to be if the story is gripping enough.
SLAM!
I wonder how well this will perform when it expands next weekend. Buzz is quiet, and Entertainment Studios seems to have mismanaged their awards campaigning to say the least. But people like this kind of film. And for people that like action films, this is a legitimate alternative to both 12 Strong and Den of Thieves, provided that they are willing to search for better films. But without Oscar buzz (because it's been mismanaged to the point where it has virtually no chance at any nominations), it'll be an uphill battle. It could be lucky to perform over 5 million on this coming expansion weekend.

Seems to be like an attempt to be another "Dances With Wolves" or "The Searchers" that falls really short. Barnack
The revenant had a Wolf that cut fire running around too that was cut in a weird positive loop, it was a very special exception imo. If we look at recent "western" in the last 10 year's with a performance that would worked or close too Magnificant 7, Revenant, Hateful 8, Millions way to die in the west , Django, Cowboys&Aliens, True Grit, Rango, Lone rangers Except for the Revenant they were all humors heavy (even if it was in the tarantino darker ways for some) Serious Western, 3:10 to Yuma, Assassination of Jesses James (so even great one with Brad Pitt), Appaloosa, etc... are usually not touched by studios for a reason, they are an extremely hard sales, you need to go back with Brokeback Mountain before The Revenant for a successful one at those budget level. A bit like the Spy genre, better have the giant franchise (Skyfall) or humors in it, otherwise it is a really thought sales now a day.

Not that good for the genres to achieve success I think you are right (even if it's critical reception would be more than good enough in many other genre), in the sense a more commercial genre can achieve success with a 7/10 type of reaction and no award attention, a slow burn western has a much narrower landing strip and need to deliver way more to have any chance to do just the opening weekend of a mediocre super heroes movie in is total run worldwide. I'm not saying no serious movie ever will make money. The Revenant had other things going for it like big action setpieces and impressive vfx, a huge A list star, and it had a lot of press coverage / good marketing. I'm just saying I think this film will really struggle to find an audience..
Deja23
Such a great movie. I loved it. Very well acted and directed imo. But I definitely see why it’s not doing so well. Cried 3 times and the ending was so slow, but perfect. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen and I’m not sure how it worked so well for me because it’s a pretty miserable movie.
holcs
Wow only 16 replies. Ha, been tons of interest for this I see. Saw it earlier tonight. As a western fan, I liked it. It's on the slower side but it's very well done. Great cinematography, really good acting all around. I have a few complaints about character development along the way but it does a good job of putting you in the time and making you feel the emotions of the characters. Bale is great, Rosamund is also really good. Def would recommend for any western fans.
