Not to take anything away from Cooper's performance, but I don't really buy the mental health angle helping him, as that's basically abandoned halfway through the movie.

But it doesn't have to. His performance is good enough and strong enough without any kind of angles. I think he nailes his character brilliantly. Not once did I feel like I was watching Bradley Cooper, and that is the sign of a strong performance. Edited by baumer

DDL plays an actual person. That alone is enough to make the Academy members salivate

I agree with you. But can you tell me when the last time someone won for playing a real person? I'm asking cause I don't know. I know Firth for the Kings Speech is one, but before that?...

Forest Whitaker played Idi amin and won, Jamie Foxx for Ray, PSH for Capote

Ok, yep, you are right...a lot of best actor winners play real people....Sean Penn Milk, Whitaker, King of Scotland, Brody The Pianist and so on

Actually no, we remember actors playing real people because those real people are known.We rarely remember movie characters but they give actors as much Oscars and noms as real people characters.
