Cookie's Corner Y4 - Spark 3 ending explained on page 14

Before I get to the list I want to address something and yes, it's what you're thinking of:

Spoiler

When I first read By the Balls, I'll freely admit that I didn't entirely get it at first. I maybe was a bit preoccupied with worrying that there was going to be some sort of nasty subtext hiding beneath its absurdity, and it took me too long to realize that it was not that, and it was more cleverly subversive than I initially believed it to be. That kinda made me question my analyzing skills to a degree, but reading it again I fully get it now.

Numbers pointed out quite eloquently what I had missed. I'm not going to go over it again here so just read his thesis if you want more details.

The nature of satire is that in its purest form it's social criticism aimed at something the author deems is wrong. While satire is often attempting to be funny, it doesn't have to be. As long as it hits its target and does so with precision, it's done its job.

By the Balls by its nature isn't really funny outside of some absurd bits, but looking back at it its satire hits hard. It's not often you have a movie, in CAYOM in particular, that has you revisit it in your head as many times as you do.

Do I think the satire holds entirely up to scrutiny? Mmm... I can see where it leaves itself open to falter. While its target is undeniably clear (toxic masculinity and society's insistence on upholding it), I'm not sure its target isn't going to easily be able to misconstrue it to whatever fits their own agenda. I know that's kind of a no-win situation - even the mindset Fight Club targets quickly adopted it to its own ends - so I'm not leaving By the Balls much at fault here.

Upheld by two strong performances by Olivia Cooke and Bradley Cooper, this is a movie where, unlike The Parvelli Reunion which I had similarly confused feelings about, makes itself much more clear upon closer dissection, and leaves you with a statement that's impossible to argue against.

Would I go as far as call it the best movie of the year like some people? No. Quite a bit from it.

Would I give it an 8/10 in retrospect? Yes.

Oh, holy shit, thanks @cookie. Glad it grew on you and I appreciate the nuanced feedback a ton really. :)

That's good to hear.

Hope I don't piss away all that goodwill now because

Spoiler

Jonny Jonny is one of the worst of the year and I do not take kindly to Pidge being dragged into it.

Pidge was in there.

Also surprised you tolerated Jonathan Testicles more than Jonny Jonny

Johnny Test was so stupid I couldn't stop laughing. Jonny Jonny was just an infuriating waste of talent and resources.

Pidge was 100% @Spagspiria's idea. I take no credit for that (I honestly had no clue who she was at the time lmao)

There are four main subplots in JONNY JONNY...

  • The murder mystery
  • James Gunn's 'The Boss Baby' remake
  • The 'Dear Evan Hansen' visit
  • The evil real estate agent

I wrote the first two. @Blankments wrote the last two. We smashed them all together at the end in no coherent order. Also, Blank wrote the opening and I wrote the post credit scene. He actually came up with most of the plot ideas and 80% of the cast list, but we both wrote out the rest of the stories.

None of that explains the elephant in the room.

Why did you do this?

Was this because I slammed Prince of Egypt?

Why did you have to drag little innocent Pidge into this?

She doesn't need your protection cookie. Her army is already at her back.

Top 25 and Top 5 Worst (I’m neglecting obvious fillers and y’all been good at avoiding irredeemable trainwrecks this year with the exception of a few) coming tonight. Only have The Square Mile left to read as I wanted to save it for last.
