Best Actress Predictions 2019

Recommended Posts

What if Lopez goes lead? reviews are all about her as they are all about Hanks in ABDIN. And he is expected to go lead. granted, not the same thing but you never know.

Funny thing is that, right now, outside of Scarlett, Awkwafina and Renee, no other actress emerged with reviews to fill the Actress line-up except Lopez (but the size of the role would determine whether lead placing is viable). So Jennifer could get in if Harriet is as shit as its trailer and Little Women not as good as hoped. There's still a spot for Charlize (Bombshell) or Woodard (Clemency).

Back in the studio system heyday, lead vs. supporting placements were often a headliner vs. character actor thing and not so much about actual screen time. With that mentality, JLo is 100 percent a leading lady stah! who doesn't belong in the "lesser" category. All of the reviews are about her, too bad we aren't going to get unfiltered Constance Wu tweets on how she really feels about that, lol.

I haven't seen Hustlers but the article it's based on is mostly about the two women ringleaders, I wouldn't say one was that much more important than the other. The movie might have shifted the focus, though.

Great post and great point! :bravo:

having read the article, while the framing device is Rosie's interview and thus Rosie as our POV character (so she naturally comes out of it smelling like roses as much as it's possible given circumstances), Samantha is equally important and juicier character for she is literally the reason for the whole operation and why it went to shit later. so I'd say co-leads by the sound of it so lead placement wouldn't be a fraud. Samantha (renamed in the movie) has her own character arc and doesn't exist just to support Rosie (also renamed I think)

Nowadays there is a huge aversion to the idea of a movie having two leads of the same gender, even though it happens all the time in every genre. Like, is Kevin Hart supporting to The Rock in that CIA movie they did together? People only argue this about awards bait.

Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for Silence of the Lambs, was he in it for 20 minutes? Lopez will definitely be more important to the story than Lili Reinhart and Kiki Palmer, even if she has less screentime than Wu.

Harriet's reviews are coming (they're fine) and Erivo is getting strong notices (as expected) but doesn't seem like she will have the passion necessary to carry her to a win. So far it seems like it's between Johansson and Zellweger (especially after that standing ovation she received at TIFF) though we still have to see about Ronan and Theron.

Robbie's the only nomination I'm expecting from Bombshell, and that's only because Robbie's turning into an industry favorite and they can't nominate her for her 2 lines in OUATIH (still good in it though). Maybe Bombshell will pull a Vice though, who knows! Crazier things have happened, Phillips just won the Golden Lion

Is anyone reading #BoycottHarriet tweets? Black twitter ain't playin:

"I wouldn't watch Cynthia Erivo in a toilet paper commercial" (GOLD STAR COMMENT)

"AND WHY THE HECK IS SHE WEARING A HEADBAND WITH NO HAIR " (another GOLD STAR)

"Cynthia Erivo is a mediocre actress whose people are likely SLAVE SELLERS"

"Much like "The Green Book", it's clear which audience this film is for. Because it's certainly NOT for ADOS (Black Americans)."

"Amen. Harriet had the eyes of a warrior not someone trying to imitate Mantan Moreland"

"We're gonna flop this movie..They underestimate the power of #ADOS the same way they did with the Bus boycotts..We will force them to respect us.."

there are tons of other tweets. don't know if they are going to hurt, create sympathy or neither.

Zero effect. Green Book's victory last year despite all the Internet trying to take it down goes to show how little stock they put in Twitter made controversies. Besides, Erivo is a Tony/Emmy-winning actress playing Harriet Tubman in a well-reviewed biopic from Focus Features. She's a really safe bet for a nomination at this point, especially when the Best Actress field has already shrunken down to just a few real contenders and it's only September.

So Zelly should Blue Jasmine her way to the win.

Judy may not have enough buzz when the awards season actually begins. It's not like it is making tons of money either and there are some strong contenders coming - Johanson, Theron, Ronan....

It's doing great for an indie this year (not saying much obviously). Current biggest grosser is The Peanut Butter Falcon with almost $18M and shouldn't have much difficulty passing that number since staying power should be very good.
