Expanding in Spain to into 50 Theatres

Other European Countries should do a expansion

Among Asia, Encore Films is adding screens to Singapore where Heron did SG$1.2M / $900K

They are putting it back in UK cinemas too. Don't know how long for.

Do you know how many cinemas the English dub will be shown in Japan and any predictions about how successful it'll be? Japan still doesn't have an official trailer but i'm sure they are able to view all the Youtube trailers.

Also Boxofficemojo is now listing the re-release of the film as being a wide release on March the 22nd, not limited. So we can expect to see it in over 2000 screens again.

But you said it is now showing in over 250 screens in Japan, I guess this includes the original version? Is the re-release in Japan going to be as wide as the original release?

With an Academy Award and Japan Academy Film Prize under its belt, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is getting more showings in Japan with a huge expansion set later this week that includes screenings of the English dub of the film across Japan. Before then though, that didn’t stop people from rushing out and seeing the latest from Studio Ghibli over the last week, giving the film two new milestones on its bird belt.

As of March 17, The Boy and the Heron has made 9.08 billion yen (US$63.55 million) at the Japanese box office with 6.12 million tickets sold. Since the film’s last major placing in the charts in September 2023, this newest update–which has the film passing 9 billion yen!–has brought the Miyazaki feature up 15 places on the all-time charts, putting it at 64th place and less than 100 million yen behind Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

Between its expansion in Japan and re-release in foreign markets, plus the impending release in China, I'm very curious about how high it'll go. I feel like passing Disney's Wish would be an interesting goal (it's around $50M away). Obviously that's pretty much entirely dependent on China, beyond a few million from these re-releases.

I was expecting more of a jump for 'The Boy and the Heron' today because of the release of the English-language version. Any reason why it hasn't made a lot more than the last few days even though the number of screens apparently increased?

the oscars bump wasn't really a big deal when spirited away won it - iirc, it was only an extra 800M yen or so

you just expected too much really

So according to The Numbers its expansion was only to 440 screens and it made 260,181 over the weekend per theater average 610 dollars. Not huge numbers. I thought they'd put it on more screens. However, it had a much higher per theater average at least than Luca at 396 dollars per screen!

The Boy and the Heron GKIDS $268,181 +549% 440 +379 $610 $46,466,236 16
