Many 90s and 2000s film in Unadjusted Top 25. Some currency/inflation reasons @peludo I believe.

Yes. Ticket price increase was quite normal along the years we have data (end of 1960s) until maybe 2011-2012, when the economical crisis hit deeply the country (over 25% unemployment). Since those years ticket price has not increased. Some years it has even dropped.

One data: the biggest year in unadjusted gross is still 2004 with about 690 million euros. 15 years ago... That year were sold more than 140 million admissions. Today we barely cross the 100 million admissions and 600 million euros.

Add to that the null increase in ticket price during this last decade and you get the lack of recent titles in both all time lists, adjusted and unadjusted. You can see that, with the exception of 2019, which has been exceptionally amazing in terms of hits, and a couple of phenomenons like TFA or BR, 10s films are just local hits, something really strange taking into account that Spanish people, in general, do not like local films too much.

A curious data to see what I am saying: during the 2011-2016 period, Hobbit 2 was the only HLW film able to win the year. The rest of years were won by a local hit (Torrente 4, The Impossible, both Ocho apellidos and A monster calls). It is really strange considering that attendance for local films are usually a 15-20% of total market facing a 60s-70s% of HLW films.

2019 has been a really exceptional year, with 7 films over €20m (absolute record). But can we asume this is the beginning of a positive trend? Maybe, but I am skeptical.

In admissions Frozen 2 will be around #65. While no other movie will enter the Top 100.

Number of movies above a certain admissions number (starting 2000):

The number 45 in 1M year 2001 means that 45 movies had at least 1M admissions, so a movie with 1.1M admissions counts into that number as one movie as does a movie that had 12M admissions:

*#46 was the rerelease of the Jungle Book movie

**#1-3 of the year 2001:

Harry Potter 1: 12,565,007 (#5 all time!) -> €76,965,244 (#6 all time!)

Lord of the Rings 1: 11,833,420 (#7 all time) -> €82,966,615 (#5 all time!)

Der Schuh des Manitu (German movie): 11,721,183 (#9 all time!) -> 65,131,342 (#13 all time!)

2019 is my final guess.

Shows that at the top (>4M it was better than any year this decade but 2015 and 2012 cause that had 4 movies above 6M). With a slight weakness in the first place, but certainly stronger than the years 2016-2018.

Also shows that numbers declined from 2001 to 2008, than 2009 was an outliner in all regards and then it stayed somewhat flat from 2010 to 2015, with 2012 and 2015 being outliners in a positive direction and then it dropped with suddenly no movie above 4M admissions in two years (2016 and 2018)

Why aren't the Chinese films in top grossers ?

One of the reasons is there are huge differences of opinion about value between mainland China and HK+TW. Chinese people didn't have many chances to know western until reform and opening in 80s. The first major Hollywood film opened in mainland China is Harrison Ford's The Fugitive in 1994. But HK & TW people have long-term exposed western cultures & been highly disdainful of things under the control of the Communist Party of China.

Most great HK & TW filmmakers in recent years came to mainland China & worked for local studios. Their reputation based on early careers can helped them to earn enormous wealth they might never own in HK & TW. HK & TW almost lost its own film industries & markets. Huge audience in mainland China never see Hollywood films(at least not in theaters). They really can't understand what good advantages Hollywood have. They believe Chinese blockbusters are the best from the heart.

So films like Nezha, Wandering Earth didn't do much in these two?

Also I heard IP Man 4 did very well in Taiwan but it's not in list.

Wandering Earth & Ne Zha have nothing special but the name of the first Chinese sci-fi/animated event movie. Outside China, few people can enjoy it so much. Wu Jing has been famous in HK for years, but people there don't wanna see him any more since he played wolf warrior, a nationalism character. Wandering Earth only made $40k on opening day in HK.

Films like Ip Man are more special in China because the major position in the cast & crew are from HK. Many audience in mainland China love HK movies from last century, and see Ip Man 4 not just Chinese but also HK movie. Studios usually release both Cantonese & Mandarin versions for HK movies. The formal is for HK and many of areas in mainland China(depend on audience). The latter is the official language in mainland. These HK movies can do better in HK, but most HK people don't have much interest in them for years.
