Poland Box Office | Avatar: The Way of Water is HUGE

Recommended Posts

It's been while when I was here last. No promises for regular updates because of my uni comitments. Althought I have some spare time to use :D first let's finish 2019 (gosh almost 2 years now!)

Bez-tytu-u.png

Clarification: wpływy=income in lc; widzowie=adm.; wpływy od premiery=income since OW in lc; widzowie od premiery= adm. since OW; ekrany=screens

UIP distributor has stopped reporting their numbers since November 2019 so some numbers for their movies aren't so correct as they were before. Same in 2020 and 2021 so far

SUM UP 2019

image.png

In 2019 record in adm in Europe 1,34B (+4,5%) and another year with record selling in Poland too with 60,9M tickets sold (+2,01%).

Income in Europe 8,5B (+6,25%) EUR and in Poland 1,13b (+2,72%) lc [about 265,5M EUR].

January 2020 was great in Poland too unfortunately it wasn't a preview of another record breaking year.

Edit: local movies dropped heavily, roughly 3,5M adm (in 2018 there was Kler biggest local and overall movie since 1999 with over 5M so drop was kind of expected but not so much I think: bad reviews for many comedies could be major problem here)

2019 SUM UP: few words

  • Frozen II in January 2020 jumped into #1 in 2019 in both lc and adm (2,663M, 4th biggest animated movie after Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and 1994 Lion King). - big suprise for me, the same with Lion King great numbers' (I expected good numbers but probably not more than 2,1-2,2M for both).
  • Biggest local movie Kogel-Mogel III (2,389M) managed suprisingly well considering bad WOM but nostalgia of the series had big impact (very popular parts 1 and 2 are shown at least 2-3 times in a year on tv especially on Christmas and Easter time)
  • Other local movies flops a bit:
    • popular series Planeta Singli with 3 part released on VD and only 1,4M,
    • Kobiety Mafii 2 1,1M (too many movies from the same director, at least 3-4 a year)
    • Polityka 1,89M (same director as Kobiety Mafii 2) topic was catchy but movie terrible.
  • 2019 was a year of CBM: first great success of Avenegers: Endgame smashing all preview records for MCU and all CBM but then suprisingly suspassed by JOKER in adm! In lc Avengers: EG stayed ahead.
    • Great year for CBM: before 2019 only 1 movie had more than 1M adm, since 2019 we have 3
    • Spider-Man: FFH and Captain Marvel respectively with 849,5K and 818K become #5 and #6 biggest CBM in adm (after Joker, A:EG, A:IW, Deadpool 2)
  • Above expectation:
    • Boże Ciało (local, 1,4M) - movie about serious subject normally don't suspass 1M
    • Green Book (912K) - Oscar movies, the artistic one without big names like DiCaprio, don't make big numbers here, this one is exeption
    • Secret Life of Pets 2 (1,448M) - I would never expect this over TS4 or HTTD 3
  • Below expectation:
    • Toy Story 4 (1,015M) - well 1M is good but I hoped at least 1,5M
    • How to Train a Dragon 3 (1,268M) - the same as TS4 [although is only a bit below expectation 😜 ]
    • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (1,618M) no comment :D
    • Fast & Furious presents: Hobbs & Shaw (494K) - FF7 had OW 390K...
    • and many others too...

@Pypa94 - Are you tracking or planning to track the Spider-Man: No Way Home presales in Poland? Based on the data I've gathered so far (not much!), I would say that around 40k tickets have already been sold. However, this is a very vague estimation...

The last time I tracked presales, it was for Avengers: Endgame. At the same point before release (10 days) I estimated that around 120-130k tickets had been sold and that the movie would have 450k admissions FRI-SUN and 660k including WED's previews and THUR. Eventually, it had 548k FRI-SUN, 702k THUR-SUN and 815k WED-SUN.

But I have no idea how these numbers translate to No Way Home... :P

I don't have proper tools to track presales, neither time nor comparison too. Good luck with this, I'll hope for some updates :) maybe Spór w kinie or BOZG will have some news for us to. Deadline had an article about presales best since TROS in 2019 (SW presales are typically huge so it's a good news)

@StarLord I found some free time to check Cinema City chain only on Friday.

340 shows (on 81 screens)

151 2D sub

126 2D dub

25 IMAX

24 4DX

10 VIP (unlimited snacks)

4 ScreenX (270 degree screen)

  • presales for shows before 2-3pm are weak and mostly useless because of normal week day
  • presales for evening/night are rather good/great - cities tier 1 and 2, bit worse in tier 3
  • also sub>dub (a lot)

CINEMA CITY 17.12.2021

All seats

Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
104391 90030 14361 13,76%

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to new covid-19 restrictions, online you can buy only until 50% of capacity so for sure numbers are a bit higher, I found couple shows over the limit.

All seats

Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
52196 37835 14361

27,51%

SOLD OUT (50%): 33

nearly sold out (>45%): 8

over 2/3 (>33%): 20

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I don't have much data to compare (final figures for EG, probably the same for IW not sure though)

  • Avengers: EG previews Cinema City only (presales)

All seats

Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
50965 16296 34669 68,03%
  • Avengers: IW previews Cinema City only (presales)
All seats Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
32336 23856 8480 26,22%

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EG had almost 600 shows on previews day across 4 biggest chains, 159 in Cinema City with seats on par with NWH first day (considering 50% limit).

BUT

Previews were in the evening, much better time.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

To sum up, NHW is doing really good in presales, half of EG finals 10 days before premiere. Overcome IW presales for previews (pretty sure).

NHW OW normally I would see on par with 5 days of IW but restrictions aren't helpful.

IW FSS 271 249 5 days 387 612

EG FSS 548 204 5 days 814 927

Will see :)

Another update after Friday :)

Thank you for the numbers! Great job! :)

Unfortunately, the Polish government announced today new restrictions. Beginning on 15 December only 30% of seats will be available (for the unvaccinated) and there will no eating/drinking allowed, which is a bummer especially in case of a big popcorn flick like No Way Home. I don't know what they're going to do about shows where more than 30% of tickets have already been sold..

I don't know if there is any sense to track presales now... all my work is garbage now 😜 I will check CC after Friday what they have done with this. Maybe they will be asking for vaccinatio provment, idk

Ok, I've done some checks for the Helios chain:

  • Opening day (Friday),
  • 21 out of 52 theaters (40%);
  • 78 shows (they decided to make available only 4 shows per day so far (2 sub + 2 dub), in some smaller ones only 2 shows (1 sub + 1 dub);
  • Total of 5658 tickets sold so far: 3893 sub, 1765 dub

Based on that I would say that Helios might have sold so far over 14k tickets for Friday shows. Combining this with Cinema City, it would give almost 30k tickets in the two big chains for the opening day. Adding the third one - Multikino - and we should be at +40k. There are also some smaller chains, so let's assume it's 45k overall.

I've done also some checks for Saturday and Sunday. Compared to Friday, on Saturday 2,5x less tickets have been sold (18k?), on Sunday it is around 7x less (6,5k?). This would give around 70k tickets for the whole opening weekend 10 days before release. Back in 2019 I estimated 120-130k tickets sold for Endgame at the same point before release, however there were obviosuly no restrictions and it was a 4 day weekend with massive previews on Wednesday. Spidey has a traditional 3 day opening with no previews.

Yes, they are fucked. I really don't know how they are supposed to handle this. In Helios there are quite a lot shows already sold out respecting the 50% capacity or close to reach it, as they made available only 4 shows per day. I don't know what they thought by doing this but it seems that they didn't expect any further restrictions... So now they would need to get rid of 20% of the people to reach the 30% capacity... xD

All in all, it sounds like demand is plenty robust given the problems :)

I've checked Cinema City in some cities and they remain 50% limit. Probably cinemas don't have power/possibility to enforce law properly if someone don't come there and say it: I'm vaccinated.

EDIT: They also removed VIP shows from 1 cinema but they remain in 2nd with info "because of restrictions range of service can change (read: no food and drink)" VIP show is about 3-4x price of normal ticket that's why I saw some ppl already resign (and I'm not suprised)

EDIT2: I think some school choose to go to NWH because some early shows double presales or even more.

PRESALES UPDATE:

Cinema City on Friday

335 shows (-5) on 79 screens (-2) [covid restrictions...]

151 2D sub (no change)

126 2D dub (no change)

25 IMAX (no change)

24 4DX (no change)

5 VIP (-5)

4 ScreenX (no change)

Cinema City D-05

All seats

Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
104192 (-199) 81216  22976 (+8615) 22,05% (+8,29%)

SOLD OUT (50%): 67 (+34)

nearly sold out (>45%): 9 (+1)

over 2/3 (>33%): 30 (+10)

Even with new restrictions Cinema City held 50% limit.

  • Adm. diffrence between sub and dub shrinked a bit thanks to schools but still is huge.
  • With the same reason tier 2 and 3 cities gain a bit.
  • Cinema City unlikely to add more shows

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also I've checked 2nd biggest chain Multikino and they have a bit different strategy: with new shows added they set 30% limit online - older shows over 30% are remained even if it is more that 50% (plus on Multikino side: we can count over the limit in opposite to CC)

Multikino on Friday

281 shows on 142 screens (but not all only for NWH at least for now)

147 2D sub

134 2D dub

Multkino D-05

All seats

Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
65489 51975 12303 18,79%

SOLD OUT (30%): 114

nearly sold out (>25%): 45

over 2/3 (>20%): 20

Multikino keeps adding new shows everytime is close to 30% so until Friday we can have better and better numbers. I'll check later in week.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@StarLord I'm leaving you Helios it is too much for me 😜 also I couldn't get numbers from Cinema 3D - it is marginal but still 4th biggest chain (or 5th if we count studios cinemas as chain)

CC+Multikino:

All seats

Free seats Sold seats Saturation%
169681 133191 35279 20,79%

PRESALES UPDATE2:

I've checked some presales for Saturday and depends on popularity of shopping mall drop is about 25 to even 75%. BUT Sat as well as Sun are week before Christmas so many ppl will be looking for presents for the last moment and many cinemas are located in shopping malls (e.g 3 out of 4 biggest cinemas in 2nd largest city in Poland are located in less or more popular shopping mall, the same in capital and other cities) and that's why walk-ins should be better on weekend than on Friday (don't know how big though)

Presales drop is the biggest in dub and late shows, sub hold so so.

Friday CC 23k + Multikino 12,5k + Helios 15k + other 6k = 56,5k

Saturday 2,5x less = 22,5k

Sunday 7x less = 8k

All: 87k

@StarLord do you have any other numbers for EG presales more close to OW?

I'll check later :)

PRESALES UPDATE 2:

Huge jump of shows for OD.

CC 618 (+281

Multikino 438 (+120)

Presales won't move much, new shows are focused on walk-ins

But I'll checked numbers later, because of so many shows it will take a lot of time 😜

Overall presales for OW should be over 100K
