Top 20 Sellers for the Week Ended 12/18/11

http://www.homemedia...ek-ended-121811

It was the week of the sequel. Rise of the Planets of the Apes, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, debuted at No. 1 on both national home video sales charts the week ended Dec. 18, outpacing Paramount/DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 2, which bowed at No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Both films had similar box office earnings; Apes earned $165.3 million, and Panda, $176.7 million. Nielsen data shows Kung Fu Panda 2 sold 77% as many units as Rise of the Planets of the Apes, overall, and 57% as many Blu-ray Discs. (Nielsen figures do not include Walmart, which is traditionally strongest in family films, so Kung Fu numbers may have been under-represented.)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes generated 49% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, while the high-definition version accounted for 36% of total Kung Fu Panda 2 disc sales.

Both of the previous week’s top sellers, Walt Disney Studios The Help (No. 1 overall) and Warner’s The Hangover Part II (No. 1 Blu-ray Disc), slipped to No. 3 on their respective charts.

Kung Fu Panda 2 did debut at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart, while Apes bowed at No. 20 — a disparity explained by the fact that 20th Century Fox withholds new releases from Netflix and Redbox by 28 days, while Paramount does not.

Walt Disney’s Fright Night, a remake of the 1985 vampire original, debuted at No. 2 on the rental chart. The film’s $18.3 million domestic theatrical gross propelled it to only a No. 16 debut on First Alert (No. 14 on the Blu-ray Disc chart).

Got that flipped the wrong way. :)

Top 20 Sellers for the Week Ended 12/25/11

http://www.homemedia...ek-ended-122511

Warner Home Video’s The Hangover Part II rode a flurry of last-minute Christmas shopping to the top of the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart the week ended Dec. 25. The comedy, in its third week in release, had debuted at No. 2 before dropping to No. 4 in its second week.

The top new release on the First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, was Warner’s Dolphin Tale at No. 2. The family drama grossed $71.51 million at the domestic box office.

Paramount/DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 2 dropped to No. 3, Disney’s The Help slipped to No. 4, and the previous week’s top seller, Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, fell to No. 5.

Among other new releases, Sony Pictures’ Midnight in Paris landed at No. 7, Sony’s Colombiana debuted at No. 13 and Lionsgate’s Warrior bowed at No. 14.

VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart saw Warner’s stalwart seller Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 jump back to No. 1 in its seventh week in release. The Potter Blu-ray tally barely edged out Apes, which dropped a spot to No. 2, and Dolphin Tale, which debuted at No. 3. The Hangover Part II finished slightly further back at No. 4.

Potter Blu-rays accounted for 40% of the title’s overall disc sales, compared with 37% for Apes, 30% for Dolphin Tale and 27% for Hangover Part II.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, Colombiana claimed the top spot, with Kung Fu Panda 2 at No. 2 and Warrior at No. 3. Midnight in Paris debuted at No. 11. Dolphin Tale did not crack the top 20 because Warner delays its new releases to rental outlets such as Redbox.

Apes' Returns as Top Seller

Several old favorites used end-of-the-year spending sprees to push their way back to the top of the sales charts the week ended Jan. 1.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, returned to the top of Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and its dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The title debuted at No. 1 after its Dec. 13 release but slipped to No. 5 in the week leading up to Christmas.

The week after Christmas proved to be a good one for Blu-ray, as the HD format accounted for almost 45% of overall top 20 unit sales. Among those who bought Apes, 68.39% opted for the Blu-ray version.

Disney’s The Help landed at No. 2 on both charts, while Warner’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 was No. 3 on both charts. Potter had been No. 1 on the Blu-ray chart the previous week.

The previous week’s top seller, The Hangover Part II, dropped to No. 4 on the overall chart and No. 6 on the Blu-ray chart.

The top new release was Warner’s Final Destination 5, which sold 56% as many copies as Apes at No. 5 on both sales charts. Anchor Bay’s Apollo 18 debuted at No. 9 (No. 11 on the BD chart).

Post-Christmas sales led to two TV DVD titles re-emerging in the Top 20: Warner’s Smallville: The Complete Tenth Season at No. 10 and Paramount’s Dexter: The Fifth Season at No. 19.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, Sony Pictures’ Colombiana repeated in the top spot, followed by Lionsgate’s Warrior, which moved up to No. 2. Apollo 18 debuted at No. 3.

Top 20 Sellers for the Week Ended 01/08/12

http://www.homemediamagazine.com/top-sellers/top-20-sellers-week-ended-010812

Warner Home Video snagged the top four spots on the national home video sales charts for the week ended Jan. 8, with the newly released Contagion debuting at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart.

Three previous releases followed: The Hangover Part II at No. 2, Dolphin Tale at No. 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 at No. 4.

The prior week’s top seller, 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, slipped back to No. 5 its fourth week, selling about 31% as many copies as Contagion.

Contagion also topped Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week, followed at No. 2 by Hangover and No. 3 by Harry Potter. Rise of the Planets of the Apes, the top-selling Blu-ray disc of the previous week, slipped to No. 6.

Contagion generated 40% of its first-week unit sales from Blu-ray Disc. On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Hangover moved up to No. 1 now that its holdback from rental outlets such as Netflix and Redbox has ended. Universal Studios’ Cowboys & Aliens, also now available at those two rental channels, shot up to No. 2 from No. 56, while 20th Century Fox’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins, also off its holdback, soared to No. 3 from No. 63.

Sony Pictures’ Colombiana, the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 4.

Another Sony release, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, was the week’s highest-charting new release, debuting on the rental chart at No. 6.
