@Aristis I was curious what you think the potential figures are for The Lion King? I'm trying to extrapolate if a worldwide run on Titanic is possible. Thanks for your help! :)

I am a bit conservative predicting the movie, especially since Germany rarely delivers.

TJB did 1,9M admissions following its original that has 27M admissions in total and is the biggest movie of all time. That one didn't really click and could just get 7% of its predecessor, that had a totally different tone though.

BATB instead got 3,4M admissions which was quite good (65% of 5,2M).

TLK now is the 8th biggest in Germany with 11,9M admissions. I won't follow TJB to get to just 800k but will probably not get close to the 65% of BATB which would lead to 7,7M. So it'll land anywhere between that.

I for myself don't really know why it should do that much more than BATB in Germany cause that (to me) seemed to be close to the ceilling for Disney LA remakes as it's far above most others except Alice1 (close to 3M) that had Jonny Depp and 3D hype. But others are much conservative than I am.

I'd say around 4M admissions might be realistic though MarkG (from InsideKino and probably the person with best knowledge about german BoxOffice) thinks it'll get to 6M to become the biggest movie of the year (though he calls himself Mr Optimistic...). So that's probably the range you should expect. TP might be around €9,5 (BATB had €9,6) and € will hopefully be better than 1,13$ (though Brexit might influence that too).

TLK prediction in Germany:

4M to 6M admissions

€38M to €57M (the higher one would be bigger than TLK94 with €56M)

$43M to $64M

I hope Germany might be infected by worldwide hype.

According to first estimates, Captain Marvel defends the #1 position with more than 390k admissions and has broken the 1m mark with around 1.16 million visitors in 11 days as the 4th film of the year.

#2 Asterix and the Mystery of the Magic Potion, .. until Sunday about 165k admissions
#3 Green Book - A special friendship ~110k, = sum 1.18 million admissions.
#4 Ostwind - Aris Arrival ~110k
#5 How to Train Your Dragon 3 - The secret World ~ 95T = 1st movie of 2019 to hit the 2 million mark, now at 2.05 million.

50k + admissions: Escape Room ~ 90k
and Rocca Changed the World ~ 60k

The top ten declined by about 28% compared to the previous week, compared to the same weekend 11/2018, when Tomb Raider led the charts with 165,828 visitors, it was about 29% up.

A satisfying weekend even if the latest Asterix movie opened a bit below my expectations. Captain Marvel had a very decent hold and should crack 2mil total. And 2018’s longrunners continue their head-to-head race, nice to see those releases take #2 and 3 of the 2018 charts!

Next weekend:  Us opens for an obviously hungry horror crowd (look at this weekend’s hold for Escape Room); otherwise there are few interesting releases (Iron Sky 2 won’t make much of a splash outside the core demo). With weather turning warmer, family fare might face harsh drops.

Those BR late late late legs are f*cking impressive, like damn, in the beginning, it looked like it would get to 2M and then 2.5 and then 3, then we were wondering if it could get past 3.2M and then thought it would fall short of IW by a little and now it passed IW with a 40k weekend and should get to 3.5M and I kinda hope that it's almost flat this coming weekend and gets past Junge. (Also it was the second biggest OS market during the weekend behind Japan and in front of China (previews) and the Netherlands)

Opening nights ...

Iron Sky 2 had a strong Wednesday (with double features) but looking at today's presales that seems like a one-day wonder.

Us gets the biggest screen but has awful presales, not good at all - even worse is German comedy Die Goldfische.

The strongest opener (and strongest movie overall) at my theater is climbing doc Free Solo (evening sellout) which is hardly surprising (huge climbing community here in Innsbruck - don't know how it's doing elsewhere)

Among holdovers, Green Book and Captain Marvel are strongest

Trend:

Quote

1st trend

CM 225k = sum 1.48m admissions

Free Solo started very strong, for reason difficult to define  a factor

US might start with 160k

Die Goldfische ~ 140k

Head Full of Honey might need to hold on its sponsor money by some media supporting orgas

Us only got 3 showtimes in my cinema for the opening week with 2 of those in very small auditoriums.

Meanwhile a trashy nazi dinosaur parody film (Iron Sky: The Coming Race LOL) gets 4 auditoriums, including the 2nd and 3rd biggest.

People, thats just one more indicator for impending doom.

Iron Sky: The Comig Race

I've seen the trailer for that before each CM screening, same counts for all others I asked about what was given as trailers before CM.

Its the visual dominant advrtising at isidekino.de too

I guess they spend quite a bit on advertising.

8other trailers made me angry, lots of age 18y and age 16y material, including for games. CM's age 12y means, parents with 6y+ children are allowed into too.

I heard a lot of sharp breaths and silent swore words each time.

In my POV no material, incl 'cleaned up for younger', material should be allowed to be included, if its for an older age limit than the movie has people were buying the ticket for.

And some Thursday actuals (source Blickpunkt:Film):

The new releases:

Free Solo (released in 294 theaters): 24k (!)
Us (450): 18.2k - also a good start
Die Goldfische (a German comedy, 478): 12k
Iron Sky - The Coming Race (340): 4.1k → 40k admissions OW in the first trend
Head Full of Honey (311): ?k → only 6k OW

The holdovers:

Captain Marvel: 26k (actuals last Thursday 45k)
Green Book: 7k (12k)

E.g. in mathäser Us gets also only medium-sized cinema halls but reservations are too rather looking ok than very good. Probably WOM will help a bit later.
Therefor Free Solo gets dumped. This movie which has nice reservation numbers even at 5pm and 11am gets only these two showtimes over the whole weekend :(. I heard that it was planned (also) as an event release but come on...these climbing docus - especially with such reviews and an Oscar - find their audience in Bavaria.

Are you from the south / around Munich too?

I am 1.5 hours away from Mathäser, if looking for a parking place is ~ good (late work-day evenings usually not a big problem), no road jam or block,...

I was late beside having started 2.5h+ before the screen time (planed to eat...), based on traffic and parking place search also.

I visit Mathäser if possible, for their English versions offer, the cinemas nearer to me that do with luck one OV once per week (if at all) have ~ bad audio/video.

The Cinema is even worse in travel-time for my location

Yes, I also live ca. 1-1.5 hours away from Munich :). Normally as a group we/I prefer the mathäser mainly because of the atmosphere (especially if we see action films), then the big, mostly clean cinema halls, because almost every (not tiny) film gets at least some showtimes and also because they offer several OVs. For arthouse or niche films (normally with older people as companionship) I try to support the smaller theaters as far as they still exist. Too bad that Munich has lost the IMAX a few years ago...

Me east of Munich

I do visit the small ones too, but Mathäser aand sometimes the biggest room of Cinemaxx, and the Cinema are the most often visited, if going to a cinema in Munich. Son also goes often in Schwabing, as there are often too OV screenings of 'smaller' moves, like e.g. The Post (2017).

I never was in the Munich IMAX, my firends, who were at 'real' ones in other cities, refused it. I think they said then its too small or...

I was in the IMAX in Berlin once during a visit there.

Thinking about trying out the IMAX in Salzburg, its not that far away fom here, maybe 30 minutes more than the Mathäser

Yes, Schwabing still has some nice smaller theaters with 'flair' and comfortableness.
I only was in the Munich IMAX with school and therefore probably more impressed than I would be now ;). Salzburg is too far away from me but I'm several times/year in the new eastern states and I could visit that one in Berlin once...
