Mexico Box Office | Challengers cannot dent Kongzilla's crown; big anime OW for Spy x Family

Recommended Posts

Tickets for kids movies were on offer during the Summer, specially for Pets. But the talking critters really connected with this market, cheap or not, 10.8+ million tickets are a massive accomplishment, it's the 2nd most attended original movie ever! I think the dubbing helped, heard good comments about it.

Weekly figures. Inferno is down 12% in lc from Angels and Demons, legs will be crucial but the forecast is not promising. Storks had again a great hold!

Another weekend, another battle: this time it's the Ouija sequel vs animated local movie about the Chupacabras ... and the haunted board won by the thinnest of scares! Both movies will do well through the next 7 days thanks to Halloween / Día de los muertos.  Inferno breaks into the yearly Top 40 but still lagging behind A&D, while Miss Peregrine is getting closer to 200M lc.

As a bonus, here's the Top 20 in audience so far in 2016:

 14,468,012     Captain America: Civil War
13,230,713     Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice
 10,850,613     Secret Life of Pets
 10,129,675     Finding Dory
   9,889,462     Suicide Squad
   9,490,599     The Jungle Book
   9,313,519     Ice Age: Collision Course
   8,164,332     Conjuring 2
   7,895,270     Deadpool
   7,670,887     Zootopia
   6,872,440     X-Men Apocalypse
   6,735,701     Kung Fu Panda 3
5,847,026     Qué culpa tiene el niño
   5,425,236     The Legend of Tarzan
5,352,202     Alice Through the Looking Glass
   5,195,270     Independence Day: Resurgence
   5,041,846     No manches Frida
   4,988,607     The Revenant
4,410,313     Now You See Me 2
   4,307,793     Me Before You

Generally speaking, 2.5 million is the breaking point for success. Anything over 5 million, it's a hit; over 10 million, a mega-hit; and over 15 million, a blockbuster of epic proportions.

How well will Doctor Strange do since it has kind of the horror feel but with fantasy?

It should theoretically do similar numbers in lc as Ant-Man (220-250M), specially if the humour/paranormal side gets exploited. Sci-fi has never been a massive draw, and it's going face strong competition this weekend.

i HOPE IT CAN SURPRISE US :(

Weekend estimates (Deadline):

  • Doctor Strange #1, $4.6M OW; slightly tighter with a 4% increase on Ant-Man and a 2% dip vs GOTG. Sadly a lower ER will hit it hard.
  • Miss Peregrine reaches $10M.
  • Ouija 2 $4M 10-day total.
  • Local movie El Jeremias opens to $600K.

In $:

GOTG opened with $6.7M and Ant-Man with $5.3M

Cinepolis shows it as opening tomorrow, along with The Accountant, local horror movie Km 31.2 and the Queen of Katwe. Doctor Strange seems to be having great weekdays, but Trolls should win the weekend - it has 2 local pop starts dubbing the main characters!

Yes, Belinda and Aleks Syntek.

All movies are showing great Mon-Thu legs (I think there were 1 or 2 holidays). After one week, Dr Strange is already Top 25 of the year!

Closer than expected!

  • Trolls #1 with a frankly soft $2.7M opening. Even Stork's OW was higher.
  • Doctor Strange #2, $10M total, so weekend may have been $2.5M, a decent 45% drop.
  • The Accountant #3, $1.5M OW. +378% on The Town, +288% on Argo and +117% over Gone Girl.

That's not incredible for Strange...Is that me or the Mexican market is pretty weak lately?
