Black Adam will be the next big movie, then a battle between Wakanda Forever and Avatar 2 for the yearly crown.

Black Adam presales pushed to late this week given Halloween Ends started yesterday. Inflation should push BA close to Shazam/Eternals/Ant-Man territory but it'll be up to wom to go further.

I'm leaning on Jimbo to get the yearly crown as re-release went great and MCU so far has been muted during Phase 4 due mixed reception and Disney+ factor. Funny thing is respective first installments for both are quite close in admissions but ATP will work better for Way of Water in order to become No. 1 of 2022.

Mexico's box office market was around double the size in yearly admissions when Black Panther came out in 2018 as compared to when Avatar released in 2009. Avatar was the 4th biggest ticket seller in Mexico at the time of its release, only behind Titanic, Ice Age 3 and (very narrowly) Shrek 2, whereas Black Panther was the 24th biggest ticket seller at the time of its release. Forget higher ticket prices giving Avatar the win, I don't expect it to be close in admissions, either.

Fair point.

I've finally been on a regular screening room (no IMAX or Dolby) with laser projection for Smile and it looks so great. Wasn't able to see Avatar but understandable why Cinepolis is pushing hard to get most of the transition done by end of the year.

What exactly is macro-XE?

Hi Gator, according to Cinepolis home page:

Macro XE

Macro XE gives new meaning to the larger-than-life theatre experience, with 150 m² screens that are 3 times larger than standard screens. Complemented with the latest technological innovations, including silver screens and 2k projectors, the Macro XE auditorium display movies in ultra high definition. Dolby Atmos takes cinema audio fidelity to another level with 2 new innovations: audio objects and overhead speakers, which together deliver a fully immersive aural experience, accentuating the movie experience like never before.

Here's a video.

Added to what @Purple Minion said it's exclusive to Cinépolis as it is their own brand of PLF screens. Several of them are making (or already did) the transition to laser projection and many of them count with ATMOS sound systems.

They compete with Cinemextremo by Cinemex although those screens are better positioned because 100% of them have had laser projection and ATMOS for far longer periods.

Cinépolis brands:

  • Traditional: 2D/3D regular screens with 5.1 sound system. These ones are moving to laser projection in 4K.
  • VIP: Premium concept. Audio and projection are pretty much the same as a traditional; experience is different since they're basically dine-in rooms with smaller capacity, reclinable seats and a menu that includes regular concessions plus meals that vary from baguettes, sushi and crepes to boneless and drinks including beer and mojitos.
  • Macro XE. PLF screens with a better projection and sound quality. Bigger capacity as well.
  • PLUUS. A mid point between a traditional and a VIP. They have no premium acommodations of a VIP but they have better seats than a traditional which they're spread widely across the room therefore allowing a lower capacity. Very rare format.
  • Junior. In audio and projection they're the same as a traditional, VIP or PLUUS. However they're only utilized to project family titles because their experience includes games and toys for kids for them to play before the screening; it has regular seats but also puffs and reclinable seats.
  • IMAX. Semi-exclusive to Cinépolis. Only one of the IMAX in the country belongs to a new small chain.
  • 4DX. Exclusive to Cinépolis.

I'll be in latin america in december, so thats where ill probably end up watching avatar 2

Dont think the somewhat close cinepolis has imax available, but which one is better between macro xe 3d and traditional laser-projected  3d? But if anything changes between now and december imax 3d should be my choice right?

It depends on which part of Latin America as Cinépolis does have presence in most of the region but not all formats are available everywhere and conditions change on each individual market. For Mexico I recomend IMAX or Cinemextremo; Macro XE only if it's in a theatre that has moved on the transition and laser projection in traditional screens is pretty cool; they're making this precisely for Way of Water so should be impressive.
