But we should not be comparing it to other Disney movies, should we? The comparison should be Avatar. We know it would drop from the first and that the exchange rate wouldn't be good hence the 'just' $100 M predictions. But no, it would deep-dive to a possible $35 M. And with TOP GUN: MAVERICK making $97.3 M there, the possibility of THE WAY OF WATER perfoming solidly has always been there.

Because, Avatar was a Fox Release. Avatar 2 is a Disney Release. Both are just opposite poles. Streaming service are heavily boycotted by theatres here. And if it's a Disney Film then it's pretty dead because they never agree a 6 months theatrical exclusive window world-wide. Ironically, you need to compare it with Post-CoVid-19 Disney release for better idea. And the most interesting thing is that it's hold pretty well (Drops within 30%) when Other Disney Film drop like 60-70%. And that's making Avatar 2 unique among Post-CoVid-19 Disney release. Also, it has already been mentioned earlier that Physical DVD/BD sales were nothing outstanding more like poor for Avatar. No good TV ratings neither anything people were interested later. Well, 3D was a 1st experience at that time &now people barely cares about it. Also keeping in mind how population/demography/average age have been changed.

BTW, BOM is out-dated, Top Gun Maverick made $100.8M in Japan

But why should it be compared just because it's Disney? The films you are referring to have never been big in Japan. They have just stayed in the $25 M to $35 M range. Now, we never expected THE WAY OF WATER to duplicate what the first did. But to just make '$35 M' is just bad considering that even DOMINION made more than $46 M+ and the very 'American' MAVERICK made $100 M+ just like what you have said.

Because it doesn't make sense. Disney Pre-pandemic &Disney Post-Pandemic is totally different. How can you compare it with Universal/Paramount? They don't even have any streaming platform here. Their drops will be totally different. If you compare it with Frozen/Aladdin it will still not make sense because they didn't have any streaming platform back then.

At the end, $30M-$35M is not a bad number for Disney unless you are comparing it with original.

Do you know why Jurassic World made $46M, Top Gun Maverick made $100M+ because they don't have streaming platform in Japan! So their film can't get pirated in Japan!

There is always a difference with one have streaming platform here and one with not.. This really made a huge difference in determining success ratio in Japan.
