So, I'm surprised Deadline is the 1st to throw cold water on this - aren't they trying to hype folks going to movies, any movies, at this point?  That headline for a family with kids - "talky", "uneventful" "not much fun"- oof.  Are they trying to keep families home watching this on streaming?

PS - Sigh - there goes my 2nd movie guess to win the summer...

Movie critics have zero obligation to pretend to like a movie in order to "hype" people to go to theaters. That's just terrible, unprofessional journalism.

Yes, but I read the review just now, and they probably have an obligation not to write THE ENTIRE PLOT in their review.

That review was meant to sabotage, not just critique.

Variety also is plot heavy in their reviews. I guess it's a trade thing.

We don't do this here. You know that.

He...is not a film critic? And I'm sure whenever he says something positive about a movie, it's how he personally feels, so...yeah.

Doesn't he hype things based on rumors he hears? Which often turn out to be false.

IO2 will be the well written future Oscar winner while DM4 will be massive for wacky Minions comedy. There is room for both movies to do great this summer for families. We should get a repeat of 2015 that had IO vs a Minions film which will save theaters this year.

It’s weird how you act we know or care who any of these random people on Reddit are.

Eh, I don't know. There's still Wild Robot, Wallace and Gromit and a bunch of indie movies.

Yeah I back this. Wild Robot I still think will win.

To be fair, the reviews cannot help but compare it to its predecessor. Which is basically judging the movie’s quality versus one of the absolute best films of the last ten years.  So around 85-90% positive must mean it’s damn good.

They’re not comparing this to other CG animated films like Migration that they’re giving a pass to. This is ‘ok, but does it hold a candle to the magnificently great Inside Out’, which it seems like it does.
