I don't get it. If this was a possible hit, why dump it in January? Or maybe WB was thinking this could still make money in the January-February corridor and then they'll capitalize on its possible Oscar campaign towards March, IF it's indeed a contender.

They're clearly not going for awards with a January 31 release date.

It's for the same reason I think Matrix 4 was sent to die against Spider-Man back then: the executives were probably utterly dumbfounded by the highly subversive art they received instead of the crowdpleasers they wanted.

Matrix 4 was sent to die when they approved the script.

Even if this is not aiming for award, it is still too harsh to have his follow up treated this badly. It is not like they are putting this over the equally quiet MLK weekend.

FWIW late January isn't always a death sentence. The Grey was a quality movie released at the end of the month a dozen years ago.

Considering its previous date was also in Q1, it seems rather obvious they know this isn't going anywhere with awards and would probably get buried during a more competitive time of the year, so there's no reason to build up expectations that have no shot of being fulfilled.

Jan/Feb is typically pretty friendly to moviegoing. Problem has just been a lack of content the last few years. If Mickey has any chance of success, it probably would find it with this release date. I hate Zas as much as anyone but if Mickey bombs, it's likely gonna be more of a testament to an innate lack of appeal than any kind of executive sabotage.

Late January isn't always death sentence just like every week in a year. But there are a lot of alternative if a movie doesn't look good enough for award prospect. Throwing it at late-January without any long weekend to help, coupled by Super bowl distraction certainly isn't one of them. A24 choose to put less focus on IC and Priscilla as award contender but still go ahead and give them favorable date and optimal commercial push. Even If WB think Dune 2 and Joker 2 worth more times to campaign, this still isn't excuse for them to do Mickey 17 like Little Things.

Maybe they see Mickey 17 as more of a Taken type deal.

Yes, we're not in 2009, but we're also not in a high-anxiety pandemic anymore.

The thing is that there is no reliable source that has said the test screenings were great, so?. People are just in denial.

Someone who saw a cut on the WB lot about 6 months ago just said that the movie is not good, they only liked the performances.

The source about the great test screenings was the same source that said the movie would be delayed months ago, which happened.

These infos are never a sure thing, but at least they’re consistent for many months at this point. People appearing right now in this very convenient moment to say how they saw it in a lot 6 months ago and hated it is way, way less reliable.

I don’t think anyone is in denial, until is released any movie can be good or not, we’re just frustrated to see WB apparently disrespecting another artist.

I don't see a January date as a sign of disrespect. Even though I think the stated rationale is dumb it's still a pretty open market at that time and it gives it a good chance to stand out. If they put it out at the end of August this year that might be a different matter.

Variety just dropped a big piece about WB spending big on many movies with big talents in hope for huge box offices so Zaslav can use them to sell the company eventually.

Between Joker 2 costing 200M and many other big budgets in their slate because WB apparently believes they have to spent gigantic amounts to make profits, Variety said that Mickey 17 costs 150M and is being dumped on January because the 2 executives that greenlit things now, De Luca and Abdy, basically doesn’t believe in it.

So, afterall, it seems like the best answer for why they’re dumping this is really that they just don’t think it’ll succeed and are prioritizing what they think it will. Very sad.

People are in so much denial in this thread. I posted the 1.5 stars reaction in this thread. It makes sense that movie just isn't very good. RPats is also a nobody outside of Twilight/Batman. But those would sell with mostly anybody. He has not established himself outside these franchise movies.

In the end, if the movie is not very good, nobody could save it. The Cannes reports were obviously bullshit (that and test screening reports came from World of Reel). The movie is likely bad and not very commercial.

RPats is a nobody outside of two huge franchies where he's the lead, what?

Mickey 17is not a franchise movie based on the most famous caped crusader. From a box office perspective, RPats is a little more critically approved Henry Cavill

I think he's primed to be a star personally, if he isn't one already. He has a huge fanbase from his Twilight days, and he greatly expanded it with Batman. Whether he's a draw, time will tell, but this movie may not be it.

I don't know why people insisted this movie go to Cannes or other festivals. The movie sounded from the start like a MOON knock off. Like Oblivion and that was decimated by critics.

I think it's far more likely that the current Warner suits don't understand the movie at all, and have no idea what to do with it, irrespective of the movie's actual quality. Remember, these are the same executives who thought The Flash was one of the best movies of all time.
