Ehh IDK if that counts as Nostalgia bait

2011 is just 4 years after the book was released

Lots of nostalgia with those of us that were kids when it all started though. I would say no to Jumanji as nostalgia driven. That was entirely an organic WOM breakout and I doubt most of the audience was even aware the og exists.

The big ones are big enough to drive the industry.  Disney has really been pushing this strategy, but the other studios are certainly putting in efforts to have similar results. Here’s a list from 2010 to now of big movies that had nostalgia boosting them:

2010 - Toy Story 3  $1.1 billion

2011 - Potter DH2  $1.3 billion

2012 - Avengers $1.5 billion

2015 - Furious 7 $1.5 billion

2015 - Jurassic World $1.7 billion

2015 - Force Awakens $2 billion

2016 - Jungle Book $1 billion

2016 - Finding Dory $1 billion

2016 - Rogue One $1 billion

2017 - Beauty & Beast $1.3 billion

2017 - Jumanji $1 billion

2019 - Avengers Endgame $2.8 billion

2019 - Lion King $1.6 billion

2019 - Toy Story $1 billion

2019 - Aladdin $1 billion

2021 - Spidey NWH $1.9 billion

2022 - Top Gun Mav $1.5 billion

2022 - Avatar Water $2.3 billion

2023 - Super Mario $1.3 billion

2023 - Barbie $1+ billion

Big IP's always come with nostalgia booster because they have been around for long and been in circlation for decades since the 80s, some from the 90s and others go way more back.

All the Marvel stuff, Disney live action, Mario, Barbie, Toy Story, Jurassic etc etc..

36 out of the 52 billion dollar movies were already well known brands and famous IPs before joining the billion dollar club either from Popular Games, comic book characters, Disney renaissance animations, Jurassic feeding on it's own nostalgia back from the 90s or the hobbit's feeding on the LOTR trilogy, Fast feeding on Paul walker nostalgia and Star wars ofcourse feeding on the 70s nostalgia.. Barbie will join this club about 10 days just like Mario did--

I don't really consider franchises that had continuous releases to be "nostalgia bait" in the same way as say TFA or Jurassic World. NWH is the exception as that was obviously relying on nostalgia for Tobey and Andrew despite being part of an ongoing series.

Tons of people saw the first Jumanji movie

A mere fraction that saw WTTJ and the latter had a huge family turnout. I had never heard of the original being some enduring passed through generations thing. If it was, WTTJ wouldn’t have had such a small OW for starters.

Yes, people watched the first Jumanji but it's pretty clear just based on how this one made it's money that it became a pretty big word of mouth hit instead of the nostalgia rush.

We can probably lump in the original LOTR trilogy as well. People waited a very long time for that, just as they waited a very long time for Superman in 1978, Batman in 1989, Spidey in 2002, Avengers 2012, and so on. Barbie is the latest example. Decades upon decades of folks who grew up liking Barbie and at least subconsciously wanting a legit big screen movie to be made for Barbie. Very very similar to the trend on Superman, Batman, Spidey, Avengers, and even LOTR

Good for Netflix, you people being mad make Netflix seem more premium than it is. Netflix could have made a day and date tho.

Netflix pretty much destroyed a stable industry, and has a “let them eat cake” attitude during a labor dispute. People “being mad at Netflix” is completely warranted.

Well ok, is warranted but could be argued it gives them publicity so people are playing their game. Because their subs were going down and they were seen as low quality.

Corporations are not as stupid as people think. They will do it again probably with Narnia and Greta Gerwig, and after Barbie that is gonna hurt, and if people give Netflix free publicity again, they are gonna do it again. There are always original Movies at Theaters Always, If Netflix get an IP people like support another one.
