CinemaCon 2024 | 8th to 11th of April | Roundup and Discussion Thread

And with the Disney panel, this year's CinemaCon has drawn to a close. Overall it was pretty lukewarm, with the big exception of Paramount's unexpectedly bold and ambitious showing. I guess it was to be expected taking into account the impact those strikes made. Hopefully next year's CinemaCon is better.

So Lionsgate just started their panel, and while it is still ongoing, so far they have announced that Margot Robbie has signed onto their long in gestation Monopoly movie and they're partnering with Blumhouse on a Blair Witch reboot. There are also more details on Guy Ritchie's next film, Henry Cavill's Highlander reboot and the usual exclusive previews of impending movies. You can eventually read about them all here:

So no word on the new Mel Gibson movie FLIGHT RISK there?

I heard they premiered a trailer for it.

So all that and Lionsgate didn't promote White Bird? Lol that's getting delayed again isn't it?

The movie already opened internationally in January. At this point just send it to VOD to die in peace.

They're likely giving up on it, akin to Paramount not mentioning The Rhythm Section by a word back in their 2019 panel. I frankly don't get why it even got made. Wonder was a solid hit for its time, but not only has it not left much of an impact on pop culture, but its story seemed pretty well-concluded to me, with not much room for more.

I've heard it was present, but they danced around explicitly mentioning his name by using "from the director of Braveheart, Hacksaw Ridge and Apocalypto".

The biggest revelation came from the Box Office Podcast coverage;

They mentioned something in the Lionsgate panel/episode getting RPX and apparently The Hurricane Heist had an RPX release?

Amazing.

finally got some sleep after working like 16 hour days. shit was wild.

okay so here were my big thoughts of things i can remember (i was at all the presentations and most of the smaller panels).

1. fall guy - i am SHOCKED but i did not like this. i am a huge gosling fan and coming off the reviews from sxsw was so excited but i am in the minority clearly when i say i..just did not find it funny. at all. to me it spreads itself too thin and succeeds at none of what it is trying. if it weren’t for gosling and blunt i would have damn near hated it. i would say the screening seemed receptive but also not like through the roof wom. i still think it will do really well.

2. biggest shock for me - how good michael looks. shit is going to do INSANE numbers.

3. saw the first 35 minutes of inside out 2, a big return to form for pixar. REALLY funny.

4. new apes is being marketed poorly because we saw nine minutes and it was really, really beautiful.

5. speak no evil, smile 2, and alien romulus look scary as hell. especially speak no evil james mcavoy was TERRIFYING in the content they showed.

6. wicked is going to do whatever its cap is. i truly think it’s has a shot at 125 million three day or 150-160 five day. universal also spent a shit ton at the presentation with marketing materials.

7. as someone who’s top three of all time include twister i was really annoyed with the sequel (especially after they turned down hunts idea) BUT THAT BEING SAID. the footage was a LOT of fun and the three leads seem great (daisy is wearing the iconic white tee and khakis in one scene).

8. quiet place looks excellent from what we saw and could definitely break out. also saw an extended scene of transformers one in 3d that was some really stunning animation.

9. deadpool footage was very very funny. a lot of breaking the third wall.

those are the big things i can remember it was a crazy week lol.
