JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Speaking of Titanic in Yen, just how much were Titanic tickets back then? Frozen has already passed it in admissions and had both an increase in ticket prices and at least some higher prices from 3D so I'm a bit perplexed on how Titanic did so much more in Yen with fewer admissions?

Apparently this year was the first time in the past 20 years that ticket prices rose. Just a guess but I guess because frozen has kids as part of their demo while Titanic didn't titanic is bound to have the higher average ticket price. also just a guess but maybe they didn't have as many discount days back then as they do now.

frozen was averaging 1230yen per ticket before price hike and 3dd. 1330 yen now, I'd say 1290 for the run. Labas said that a movie that skews older can have a 1500+ average.

That would be my guess too. Titanic skewed older and there weren't many discount days in the 90s.

I think it's funny that people post how the DVD release is killing Frozen and then in the next post say "Japan doesn't buy DVDs". Can't be both ways.

It's more the fact that theaters are going to drop a ton of screens for Frozen when it comes out on dvd.

According to the latest news in Japan, Frozen MovieNex reservation has accumulated more than 400,000 pieces within

10 days, which has broken Walt Disney record.

Uk - sold 500k discs at first two days. (current total sold near 2 million discs)

USA - sold 3.2 million discs at first day. (current total estimates - at least sold more than 12 million discs)

Japan - pre-order sales 400k at before a month for release.

*Japan pre-order is very impressive. <_< maybe Japan will become a 2nd biggest home video sales market for frozen.

Interesting stats.

Where does Frozen rank in the total number of discs sold in USA for a movie (DVD+BD combined) ?

dont forget vod. Cost much less than a dvd or going to the theater. That is the killer.

As has been said before, it isn't the DVD sales that kill movies in Japan, its the rentals (apparently huge).

Though that presale number for Frozen is astounding. Definitely on track to be in the top few DVD sellers of all time, so it may pay off for Disney.

not going to pay off. Looking how SA and avatar kept running for months frozen would have made 100m more and the dvd sales would still be close the same number whether its july or December.

Just from the first two weeks of sales it's already the fourth bestselling BD of all time. Since it's been out for over two months, and has regularly led the pack in sales, it's probably not too much of a stretch to expect that it's at least the second bestselling of all time, and may have overtaken Avatar.

It's more difficult to get data on overall DVD sales, because really robust tracking and such is overall pretty recent (2009 or so), so many older titles don't have super accurate numbers that are easily available. Even so, The Dark Knight sold over 17m DVDs, and has over 2m in BD sales, so it's total combined is around 20m. Avatar's sitting around 17m combined.

Frozen's one week sales are north of 7m combined, and it's probably not too much of a stretch to guess that after two months it's pushing north of 15m. It could even be closer to 20m, if DVD sales are taking up a larger and larger percentage. Suffice to say, it's probably in the running for top three, at least for the past five years of tracking.

As far as all time video sales, The Lion King moved about 80m VHS tapes back in the 90s. Nothing will ever top that.

80m vhs? And it was released 9 months after it opened. There is a fine example. It had a second wind after a few months allowing it to make 50m more at the end of the run, not to mention it probably made more in the first 3 months bc people weren't thinking it would be coming on video soon. Video sales were gigantic. More people including a friend of mine would have seen frozen in feb if they knew it wasn't available on dvd for 6 more months. So it wasn't a matter of jus 10-20m at the BO after the release but much more before. Japan was hold in strong before the announcement. They're losing millions before and after the dvd. Boneheads. The question is how much of that 100M would go to Disney

that $100M is probably about $40M for Disney and those combo-pack sales are already at $15.683M a month from release.

Japan is going to play its first match at the World Cup tonight (Brazilian Time). It will be Sunday there in Japan. Is that going to affect the Box Office? What do you think?

The way the matches are scheduled, most of the matches seem to happen around early morning in east asia. People don't really go to movies that early anyway so I don't think it should affect it that much.
