Anyone know how many copies the Tangled Bluray has sold in Japan so far? I really would really like to know so I can compare it to Frozen sales. Wasn't Tangled also rereleased on Bluray last week along with Frozen?

Both movies are the same "type" of movies that the Japan people should be interested in.EDIT: Oh wait, I now see it on the list. Huh? Tangled wasn't released in Japan on Bluray before today?

Labas, if it's doing that well why don't theater owners give it more showtimes and seats to movies below it in rankings?

Well,  the good news is that the biggest chain Aeon Cinema has decided to extend Frozen's run

for a week .  I think if Frozen keeps this pace, everything is possible...

Frozen also breaks the Japanese first-week BD/DVD rental market record, with more than 540,000 rentals.

The old record holder was Avatar.

This proves my point about Frozen and the idiotic decision to release the DVD so early in its run.  The Japanese eyeballs that should have been plastered against the silver screen in a Toho cinema are now plastered against the LED TV at home.

Time to give it a rest already. It is pointless to be complain about Frozen's video released, which is now long done with.

Move on to something else like I have like tracking Frozen's video sales.

Do you even know what I was referring to? Answer: no. Therefore I agree: your comment was pretty stupid.

Katch is someone who, like others here, usually roots for movies aiming at men/boys and not exactly beloved by critics (to use an euphemism). There was the need, then, to clarify that if a country's general taste for movies doesn't meet his (their) 'endorsement', then the same country should feel 'gratified' by that.

Umm.. apart from TF4, all the other films I like are more beloved by the critics than Maleficent. Cap2, DOFP, EOT, Dragons 2 and Apes 2 ALL have better RT ratings than Frozen. I like one bad movie and suddenly my taste is considered inferior. Who's being unfair here?

My point have nothing to do with what movies are doing well and more to do with how 'imbalance' the market has turned out to be.

Just to develop the argument a little, Japan may have its flaws, but it is clearly one of the best markets. It doesn't let a film succeed just because it's a blockbuster filled with special effects (*cough*China*cough*), it's not 'sick of superhero fever', it doesn't let the many crappy animated sequels make more than peanuts (Ice Age, Madagascar, Shrek all flopped or got very mediocre numbers), it buried the embarassing Hobbit movies, it is very Pixar-friendly, it has a good balance between business from national and imported movies, it's the market where movies can become insanely leggy by modern standards, ecc ecc.

There's nothing else like that around here.

Should I remind you that Japan was one of the only few the markets that craps like Resident Evil series did well? And in what universe the Hobbit movies are considered worse than Maleficent? Fact is, every country have a fair share of liking good/bad movies. Just because Japanese taste and your taste are synchronised doesn't mean you have to hold Japan on a higher standard.

I didn't just follow Japan BO last year. I've followed it for ages, long enough to see how far it's changed and not for the better. I remember the day when Japan B.O was great. I remember the day when all big franchises (LOTR, SW, HP, POTC) made gazillion there. They even liked Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible. And if I look back further, Jurassic Park made $120m and ID4 made $92m there. Those were the good days.

Now only movies aimed at girls/women with brand recognition can have any hope to thrive in Japan. Where're those audience that used to embrace ID4 type of film?

Women should just stay in the kitchen right?

Stop being so misogynistic. Just because you don't like movies aimed at female audience doesn't mean they shouldn't do well.

Also Japan loves PIXAR movies, 13 of their 14 movies have had male leads.

Animations with male leads were still animations, they're still testosterone-free movies.

Women should do whatever they please. They're great for supporting the movies they love. It's the absence of Japanese men with the same passion I have problem with.

And to prove my point, EOT's admission after 19 days are already behind Frozen on it's 20th week.

I can't be a misogynist. I don't hate myself.

Is Malf staying #1 next weekend? Can Disney hit 20 weekends at #1?

It all depends on Godzilla, and how well its received on OW.Does anyone know if the first one was popular when it opened in Japan. BOM doesn't have individual grosses, just the overall OS total.

Is there a website where one sees daily box-office chart of Japan just like BOM for the US?

No. There are sites in Japanese that post the daily admissions for various chains, which some members here have used to extrapolate the full day's gross.

Thank you for the quick answer :)

I don't speak Japanese but it seems according to google translate, Pokemon 3-day weekend gross was the following:

¥559.9 million

The first Godzilla earned 5 billion yen, which is considered the blockbuster mark in Japan.  It's kinda the equivalent of a $225 million or so earner in the US if that helps out it into perspective.

The film most likely opened really high (though not high enough that anyone cared to record it!) and had poor legs.  It's a pretty poorly received film, and even Toho later renamed the Godzilla in the film as simply "Zilla".  "Zilla" sees his death at the hands of the actual Godzilla in the 2004 film, Godzilla: Final Wars.

The new film should open at #1 this weekend pretty easily. Maleficent will earn less than 400 million, so a weekend under 400 million for Godzilla would make it a huge bomb.  Unless last weekend was very deflated, holdovers don't normally see exceptional holds this upcoming weekend since they're coming off a holiday weekend and is it's the first weekend after Summer weekdays begin.
